Bukit Lawang Trust

Support for English Education

Bukit Lawang, Indonesia show on map

We provide free English classes to kindergarten, primary school children, teenagers, and adults in the Bukit Lawang area.

The Bukit Lawang Trust building is a community centred place where we want the local community and children to come and feel welcome. We provide a number of free English classes, and kindergarten classes, to children in the community. We originally opened as a clinic in 2004 but when the need for a clinic subsided, we became a school and communtiy center. We believe the best way out of poverty is education and one is never too young or too old to start!

The program aims to enhance the English education, though we are working to start more classes, in the area. We want children to start young and our most popular program is our kindergarten program.

Volunteers who assist in the kindergarten classes will be working with our local teachers who run the kindergarten. Volutneers who work with primary school children or teenagers work with our Head of Education and other volunteers. They will be assisted by an Indonesian teacher as well but in the primary school and teenager classes the volunteer runs the class.

Volunteers will work with local teachers, staff, and other volunteers as well as our full time volunteers who manage education and conservation education. The volunteers may bring educational equipment or items that could be useful in a classroom. Feel free to ask us and we can work with you to let you know things we would like and about setting up a joint fundraiser.

The volunteers can expect to live in a beautiful area and in a dynamic and fun-filled community center always buzzing with the sounds of kids, music, and motorbikes!

We have a number of things that they can use to enhance their lesson and they can expect to learn how to make more detailed lesson plans, engage and interact in the classroom, and evaluate themselves after their lessons.

Typical day

Weekdays: After the initial orientation, you will volunteer for roughly 4-6 hours per day. The start times and daily workload varies but a typical morning schedule is as follows:

8:00 AM Volunteers wake up and get breakfast. Breakfast and all meals are vegetarian. Breakfast is made upon request. Kindergarden lessons begin in the morning, with a half hour break in the middle; volunteers are responsible for only 45 minutes of kindergarten class, where we focus on learning through play and smaller groups. Some volunteers may be responsible for afternoon lessons. Volunteers usually do either kindergarden or afternoon lessons depending on preference and number of volunteers, and you are always supported by 2-3 local teachers.

10.45 AM - 12:00 PM Volunteers take a quick break, and then typically start on household jobs such as painting, maintaining, making signs, gardening, or working on personal jobs.

12:00-2:00 PM Lunch is served and typically volunteers eat together. After lunch volunteers have free time to relax, prepare lessons, or just sit and chat.

2:00 - 4:00 Afternoon lessons are two one-hour lessons. Each class comes twice per week. Volunteers have quite a free reign over classroom style and approach, and lessons can involve going outside or to the roof, playing games, or classic school style.

4:00-5:00 PM Most days have an extra class such as green class, which focuses on recycling and conservation topics, reading room, and any topics that volunteers are passionate about and want to teach such as music, science, drama, etc – anything volunteers feel will be  useful and enjoyable.

Details on Arrival

Volunteers are able to apply and volunteer throughout the year. We want to work together with you to find a time that works for both the volunteers and the trust. We are closed during Ramadhan so please check when that occurs each year. In 2018 it is in the second part of May to the middle of June.

We prefer our volunteers to stay two months but if it is not possible one month is okay. We also like it if our volunteers arrive on a friday, saturday, or sunday and then begin volunteering on Mondays.

Free-time activities

You can go trekking from Bukit Lawang to Gunung Leuser National Park and see the famous Sumatran Orangutan. Most volunteers do a two day one night trek and usually are fortunate enough to see Orangutans.

In Bukit Lawang there is a river which runs through the village that people often go swimming in or relax and have a coffee or beer on the river.

There are multiple bars and guest houses with extremely friendly locals and live music on most nights.

Our volunteers often read, and relax on the hammock, go for walks, visit newly made friends in town, blog, study Indonesian, rent a motorbike and go for a drive in the countryside! Other places that may be of interest are below:

At the weekend there are innumerable places located nearby that are must see!

Batu Katak - A quiet place on the river and near waterfalls.

Tangkahan - Has an elephant camp where visitors can bathe elephants in the river. We support bathing them, and the projects but we do not support riding the elephants and hope you will share that belief with us.

Batu Rongring - Beautiful for trekking.

Berestagi - For long weekends or traveling before or after volunteers can visit this lovely town in the mountains and go trekking. It is a bit colder here and that makes it a popular place among locals and tourists!

Lake Toba - A beautiful island (Samosir) in the middle of the lake is home to waterfalls, hot springs, beaches, and more.
