Support Public Hospitals

Quito , Ecuador show on map
Make a patient smile! Assist doctors and nurses and plan activities for patients at a hospital in Ecuador. Gain hands-on medical experience! This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Singles
Couples
50+

The Project

In Ecuador, the healthcare system is split up into both private and public hospitals. Private hospitals are very well equipped, while public hospitals often lack beds, staff, and other resources needed to provide adequate medical care to the population. These hospitals rely heavily on volunteers to provide the care that patients desperately need.

The project is mainly aimed at medical students and nurses with experience, but people without experience are welcome too. Although those without experience can’t provide medical care, they can still care for patients by doing activities and talking with them. Any assistance provided is greatly needed and appreciated.

Your Tasks

During your first couple of days of volunteering at the hospital, you will receive an orientation. This includes a tour of the hospital, a visit to all the different areas, and a meeting with the staff. While at the hospital, you can choose which area(s) you would like to work in, and then you will accompany your doctor or nurse and look at the different procedures in the area.

Day-to-day tasks will depend on your previous experience. Volunteers who have some medical experience will take blood pressure and assist nurses during treatments. Medical students or doctors will observe surgeries and assist with treatments. Those with no healthcare background will go on walks with patients and play games with them.

You can choose if you want to work Monday-Friday, from 8:00 am to 12:30 pm or 2:00 pm until 5:30 pm (subject to changes). You will have weekends off.

On the first day of the project, you will spend the day in Quito where you will explore the city and familiarize yourself with the public transportation system. You will also learn about issues in the country, security measures, and more details about your accommodation.

Free-time activities

In your free time, there are many different activities to choose from since you are so close to the center of the city. You can do sports, go to concerts (weekly), or socialize in one of the city’s many bars and restaurants. You will also have time to explore the wonderful culture of Ecuador! Day trips to do outdoor-sports can be booked at tour agencies in Quito.
