Supporter in Dog's Shelter

Cusco, Peru show on map

A misunderstanding of animal species and how to care for them results in many stray and mistreated pets. You will work to remedy this by providing care and rehabilitation

At our Dog Care Program volunteers will work with the many stray dogs that live on the streets of Cusco. Our Shelter is just outside Cusco’s city and accommodates about 130 dogs that were living in extreme poor conditions, had been abandoned and were really sick.

The shelter gives home for dogs that had a hard life on the streets. And now have food and care. They are looked after by 2 volunteers that organize the project and work, making sure they are all in good condition and well looked after. The works are usually in the mornings when cleaning, feeding and other works take place.

The project is made possible entirely by private contributions. The Shelter receives no local, state or federal funding and we depend on the generosity of people like you to meet our annual operating budget.

This project requires volunteers who are innovative, motivated, and willing to take charge. Tasks may include networking with small organizations that would like to help these dogs, raising funds, location searching, and direct work with the dogs, like feeding, cleaning, taking care for sick dogs and a small help with constructions to make the living of the little ones a little better

We will give you the equipment you will need for working, during raining season (November to March) you may require to bring rubber boots so you can walk around the project easily and it is important that you bring adequate clothing as you will get a little dirty.

Typical day

While our programs are flexible and can be fit to your requirements, an example of a typical day is as follows:

7:30 AM Breakfast with the host family
8:00 AM Volunteer leaves home and takes public transport (or in some cases walks) to the project with other volunteers and program staff. You will be given a plan for your work. There is usually a tea break and a lunch break. Work and hours is dependent on the project and location that the volunteer is participating in.
2:00 PM-5:00 PM Work at the project usually ends. The volunteer at this point is free to visit and explore the city. When you first arrive you will also have the city tour in the afternoon and the night tour during the evening. You may also want to spend additional time working at your project up until the late afternoon.
7-7:30 PM Dinner with the host family.

If a volunteer is taking advantage of the Spanish language course, they will usually volunteer for half the day and take Spanish lessons for 1-4 hours in the other part of the day.
