Take Care of Parrots

San Jose , Costa Rica show on map
Help support parrot conservation efforts in the rainforest by directly interacting with and taking care of Costa Rican parrots! This volunteer program is especially suitable for:

The Project

There is only a handful of conservation projects that devote themselves exclusively to parrots. With parrot populations decreasing, conservations and volunteers are vital in Costa Rica. The main two parrots in the region are the bright red Macaw (Ara macao), and the big Macaw (Ara ambiguus). The conservation centers care for injured birds and prepare them to be released back into the wild after breeding. The main goal of the center is to save the species. Most of the parrots arrive after being confiscated or rescued.

The center also studies the habitat of parrots and makes an effort to help them live in freedom. The decline of parrots in Costa Rica has gotten so out of control that there are only about 25-35 breeding pairs of the green Macaws in the entire country of Costa Rica. There are about 40-60 parrots at the center (number is subject to change, depending on parrot reproduction and release). About 10-15 parrots are released into the wild each year.

Your Tasks

As a volunteer for this project, you will help save the parrot species in Costa Rica, which has been declining over the years. There are two main locations where you can volunteer: the hatchery and release stations, which are located on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica in the Guanacaste province. Another release station is located on the Caribbean coast, just south of the town of Puerto Viejo in the Limón province.

  1. Day-to-day tasks at the center on the Pacific coast include maintaining the parrot cages, constructing or cleaning them, feeding the parrots regularly, collecting food such as fruits, making toys for the parrots, and assisting with the healthcare of parrots.
  2. Day-to-day tasks at the Caribbean center include maintenance of the release cages (fixing and cleaning them), planting fodder trees, monitoring parrots, collecting as much research as possible, and helping with the release of parrots.

No previous experience is required to volunteer, but it is helpful. As a volunteer, you should be able to work on a team, but also independently. You should like birds, as you will start working very closely with them right away.

Free-time activities

At both project locations, there are many different things to do in your spare time, such as swimming and water sports in the ocean. In addition, you can explore the beaches and admire the breathtaking views that Costa Rica has to offer.
