Tea Research and Organic Farming program is a very unique kind of program in Nepal, which offers you an opportunity to experience the typical life style of rural Nepal giving the chance for you to enjoy your time in one of Asia’s most admired Himalayan Tea Shangri-La, having most beautiful and largest tea gardens in Asia! Ilam, in Eastern Nepal in one such hidden paradise in Himalayas where you will see majestic Himalayan views with “Rolling Hills of Carpet like Tea Gardens in Nepal”.  

In this program, you will be able to see and learn how the Tea in Himalayas is blended, with several tea processing factory and tea gardens visit. Not only that during your stay you will be able to enjoy typical Nepali home stay where you will be an integral part of family throughout your stay in Nepal and also enjoy freshly cooked delicious Nepali organic meals with fresh tea ships; that comes in the flavor of high altitude Himalayan aroma, giving you one of the best tea experience that you can get in the World!

During your Nepal trip as a volunteer in Nepal, there are many adventure travel opportunities in your weekend or even take some time gap from your program. In order to spend your weekend you can go visiting one of the Asia's Largest and most beautiful tea gardens in Ilam (Eastern Nepal) where you can see the majestic views of carpet like rolling hills covered with teas, or go wild in jungle safari or take a time gap for going to the lap of the Himalayas for Trekking adventures!

Typical day

There is no typical working day. Your working time is flexible. But you can expect to work 5-6 days a week about 6-8 hours a day. All the other time is your free time where you can relax, go on some adventures or discover the surroundings.

As a Volunteer in this program, your activities will be:

  • Learn the process of making Tea though organic farming.
  • Learn about the procedure of Tea Garden Management.
  • Conduct various researches in Organic Tea cultivation and production.
  • Tea Gardens and Tea processing factory visits.
  • Be involved with local people for Tea leaves picking, tea processing and tea packaging.

This program is all year round program, so available throughout the year! We are flexible with dates and duration. 

Free-time activities

Well, in the free time, you can have the opportunity to visit nearby villages to experience typical Nepali life.  

You are welcome to go on short hiking trips to experience the wonderful nature of Nepal or simply relax and do some yoga in our beautiful village. 

During the weekend you can go short trekking in Mountains, rafting, or on safari etc. 

We recommend you visit our most beautiful places like Ilam, Bhedetar, Gufapokhari, Taplejung and many other interesting places etc.

Program Requirements

In order to join the program you need to be at least 18 years old on the program start date. There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s). Of course, there is an exception for children that are accompanied by their parents.

Airport Pickup at Tribhuvan International Airport

You will be provided Airport Pick up service from Tribhuwan International Airport, Kathmandu. Upon the receipt of your flight details we will pick up you from Kathmandu airport.

Accommodation

Volunteers will be provided with a spacious separate room on single / double occupancy basis. The rooms are very clean, with good peaceful, homely and family environment. Neat and clean Bathrooms for sharing available.

Food & Beverages

All meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner) during your training period & placement, will be provided according to the Nepali menu. If you have any special dietary requirements or any food suggestions we provided it to you according to your own need... for example for vegetarian we can provide vegetarian foods only!

Visa, flights, travel insurance or vaccinations are NOT included in the program fees.
Flight Tickets
The nearest airport is Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) in Kathmandu. We assist you to find cheap flights to Nepal.
Travel Insurance
Going abroad is an adventure and it is always best to be prepared. Sudden illness or injury, cancellation or theft - a travel insurance for Nepal provides security and is a plus to have.
Vaccines
If you are intending to volunteer in Nepal you should seek medical advice before starting your social journey. Check your required vaccinations for Nepal.

You can volunteer at the project site in Kathmandu/Nepal between 4 weeks and 12 weeks. Please note that the above shown program fees are estimated and subject to exchange rate fluctuations. Indra Foundation will let you know about the final price during your application process.
Crowdfunding Service
Generally, volunteering abroad involves certain costs. In case you need financial support, we will assist you to fundraise your volunteer program in Nepal.
Deposit (15%)
The deposit is simply to reserve your volunteer placement. Payments are handled by PayPal, our trusted global payment provider. If you don't have a PayPal account, you can also pay using a credit card.
Final Payment (85%)
Your final payment will be agreed with Indra Foundation during the application process. Common solutions are either via bank transfer or a cash payment at the project site.
