Only with good education you can once have a good job. Help children in achieving their goals and escape from poverty.
Like everything in Tanzania, the level of education someone can achieve
usually depends on the parent's income. Kindergartens in Tanzania can
not be compared to Kindergartens in Europe
or North America. The focus is on learning the basic skills of reading,
writing and arithmetic, therefore, you will
mainly be active in teaching the children. But there will also be time
to play with the children and do some recreational work. Also primary
schools work differently, with ex-cathedra teaching and monotonous
copying from the blackboard being the norm.
In the pre-school 56 children are being taught by five teachers divided into a baby class, a middle class and a preparatory class. In the primary school more than 60 pupils are taught by 10 teachers. The children are divided into six classes due to the children's age and skills, reflecting a good ratio of teachers to students.
You will assist and support the teachers in teaching, teach yourself if you like and play with the children. Furthermore, you can help preparing food for the students and beautifying the school. Apart from that your ideas are welcome, you can let your creativity run freely and be active wherever you wish to. You choose if you will only work in the preschool, only in the primary school or support both schools with your passion and knowledge.
A typical day starts at 7:30 am in the morning when you are asked to be at the school. From 8:00 am you will support the
teachers in the class where they need you the most, teaching English, mathematics, history, geography, arts, sports, and so on.
You will support the teachers during every lesson, making sure that the children listen or also do one on one teaching with children who need more support. The Preschool ends at 12:30 pm and the Primary School at 4:00 pm, with 40 minutes lunch break in between.
In the afternoon you can play with the children, help them during tuiton and homework or help fixing things in and around the school.
Your ideas and input are welcome at the school!
