Teach English at a Monastery School

Agency | GoEco
Education Language Teaching

Help to provide education for and support to children from poor local families.

The project

During your time at the project you will be staying at an authentic Buddhist monastery school located in Northeastern Mandalay. The school was founded in 1993 by two monks who wanted to provide support to children from poor families. Today, the school provides support and education to over 6,000 students between the ages of 7 and 18 years, all from different backgrounds. The monastery also plays home to approximately 1,000 people, including monks and novices. Many of the learners are pre-university students, which allows  great interaction and also the opportunity to make new friends. This is a great chance for an authentic cultural exchange!

The location

Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, is a country in Southeast Asia bordered by India, China and Thailand. Despite its recent modernization, the essence of the mythical landscape is undeniably still intact, making the country a uniquely authentic place to explore. From golden Buddhas and ancient treasures in Yangon, to magical temples in Bagan, the tranquility of Inle Lake and treks through the Shan hills - Myanmar is a magical place that is sure to excite and intrigue you.

Volunteer Work

During this program, you will be teaching English. The school offers free education to students whose families cannot afford standard education. With a total of around 6,000 students, you will find yourself teaching from primary to pre-university levels.

This project focuses on affording learners the opportunity to communicate in English as well as get higher paying jobs in the future. You are also welcome to teach other subjects as long as you use English as your main language of instruction and prompt the students to speak English during your lessons.

Upon arrival, you will be shown the teaching and subject schedule in order for you to choose your classes.

As a volunteer on this project you will

  • Help students improve their English language skills and future employment opportunities
  • Assist the local staff with quality support
  • Give you an experience of intercultural exchange and valuable teaching skills

Culture Week

For an additional fee, volunteers can come 1 week before their project start date to experience the culture and traditions of Myanmar! Get to know your fellow volunteers and enjoy your pre-volunteer time exploring the local outdoor markets, making a splash in the rivers, or learning some phrases in the local language!

Free-time activities

Mandalay

With its variety of attractions, Mandalay is a favorite among those who visit Myanmar. These attractions include the Golden Palace Monastery, the Mahamuni Pagoda, the Kuthodaw Pagoda, Mingun Temple and the Bargaya Monastery to name just a few. The city center of Mandalay is close to your accommodation so the possibilities for sightseeing and exploration during your free time are endless. Along with these excursions, a view of one of Myanmar’s world renowned spectacular sunsets or sunrises is a must!

Mandalay Hill

Another recommended attraction that you can visit during the weekends Mandalay Hill - famous for its abundance of pagodas and monasteries as well as being a pilgrimage site for Buddhists. Getting to the top of the hill is a rewarding experience and once there, you will be greeted by a panoramic view of the city and the Sutaungpyei Pagoda (“wish-fulfilling” pagoda).

Bagan Temples

Probably Myanmar’s most famous attraction are the Bagan Temples. They can be reached by bus, plane, train and even a boat from Mandalay.

Inle Lake

Another famous destination, known for its unique beauty and adventure possibilities, including hiking, boat riding and more!

Kalaw

Another option close to Inle, albeit a bit less developed is Kalaw. It has become a favorite among backpackers escaping the crowds but still wanting to get a taste of the nature that Myanmar has to offer. If you have time, it is possible to go on a three-day trek from Kalaw to Inle Lake!
