The Light and Leadership focuses primarily on educational and empowerment within three programs in Huaycán, Peru in the outskirts of Lima, Peru. LLI focuses on giving responsible and ethical volunteer placements to international volunteers. We ensure that our programs are directly benefiting the community and are focused on real impact and real community development. Volunteers live in a community in a Volunteer house that is a minute or two walk from the Kids Center and Education Offices as well as the Teen Center. Volunteers typically work within one or both of the Centers teaching classes while lesson planning and prepping in the Education Offices. Huaycán is about an hour via public transit to the center of traffic depending on traffic!

Peru consistently is evaluated as one of the worst math education systems world-wide. Our math program, operated as an after-school homework help program, works to improve students' understanding of math principles, improve their math academic grades and also, encourage a love for math!

Our chess program works in several different areas within the community, allowing the volunteer to meet and play against a variety of different ages groups and skill levels. Volunteers don't need to be Chess grandmasters, but instead, have basic working knowledge of the game and work with students to learn strategies (we have books available). Chess tournaments bring students from all over the community together in a fun, but competitive environment!

As a result, volunteers are given large amounts of responsibility and are valued as important players in our growth and impact as an organization. Each volunteer receives a primary and secondary placement within our programs, yet all volunteers contribute and help each other out when it's needed in other placements/programs.

We look forward to seeing your application!

Typical day

Volunteers may teach two to three classes a day. Day start at 10am leaving volunteers to have mornings to themselves. Volunteers may do yoga on the roof, hike the nearby cerro (tall hill), or simply rest. Mornings are typically reserved for lesson planning and preparation. Lunches are communal and held at the volunteer house between 12 and 1. Classes typically start at 3pm (after school) and run through the evening and sometimes we hold special events on weekend nights! Volunteers then return to the volunteer house for dinner and may hang in the common room with other volunteers, play games. or go out to eat on the main road (called La Quince).

Details on Arrival

We are looking for volunteers to come throughout the year (with the exception of early December through early January).
