Teacher and Helper for Indigenous Women

Chiapas , Mexico

In this program, volunteers enable indigenous women by providing help about diverse topics depending on volunteer's abilities.

About the Program

Our program is important because it encourages indigenous women to apply and print their abilities of Mexican culture into handcrafts and this leads to increase their quality of life through sales. We mainly face poverty and ignorance of indigenous people, they don't know how much a handcraft can be valued, we try to solve this social issue by giving them materials to work (because they don't have access to this) also by planning social projects about collections giving and idea about trending clothes so they can make a fashion dress or a tablecloth.

Your Role as a Volunteer

The role of the volunteer is to apply their abilities by giving them ideas to work, sell, help to make a good project and implement it also.

This helps volunteers to meet mexican culture and also they can learn their native language, the benefits are for both, volunteer and indigenous women. The volunteer will be working at the working place of the women where they make by hand the crafts, volunteers will be living near the working place. Also they will be volunteering direct contact with indigenous women. All the volunteers we have had said that they had learned a lot of the culture and they leave happy also there are ones who have decided to stay longer than they expected.

What we expect

We expect that volunteers apply their knowledge in our activities with women, that's why we need volunteer's with college degree or coursing college, it doesn't matter if it's their first or last semester of college. They don't have to bring special equipment.

The volunteer should speak Spanish and have a basic knowledge about business or design so they could help with courses, also the volunteer should stay and live in San Cristobal de las Casas at least one month.

There's full access to internet only in the office.

Roles & Responsibilities

The volunteer's have the task of teaching, creating classes and workshops they alternate between working at our offices/store and traveling to the communities to give workshops to our programs beneficiaries.

Responsibilities when working at our office/store: inventories, showing customers the products and giving them information, working on online store, training for workshops or preparing them, general office work.

Responsibilities when giving workshops: traveling to the communities to give the workshops and spending time with the beneficiaries of our program.  The volunteers are trained before giving the workshops or, if they have a particular skill that can be taught to our beneficiaries, we will work with them on creating the workshop to teach this skill.
