Help the children to shine by education and playing with them.
Like everything in Tanzania, the level of education someone can achieve
usually depends on the parent's income. Kindergartens in Tanzania can
not be compared to Kindergartens in Europe
or North America. The focus is on learning the basic skills of reading,
writing and arithmetic, therefore, you will
mainly be active in teaching the children. But there will also be time
to play with the children and do some recreational work. Also primary
schools work differently, with ex-cathedra teaching and monotonous
copying from the blackboard.
The Kilimani Pre- & Primary School is a story of success. They started as small school in 1997, currently education around 600 students from the age of five to 15 years in 20 different classes taken care by 28 teachers. For years they achieved the best results in the final exams of Standard Seven (the finally year before the students join Secondary School).
Depending on your interests, skills and need you will teach in different classes, from Preschool up to Standard 7, especially English, Computer Science and games. The school is interested in launching an afternoon program for the children which you can help them to start. How about playing football, starting a library or a handicraft club?
A typical day in the Kilimani Pre- & Primary School starts at 7:30 am when you are supposed to be at the school. You will discuss the daily acitivties and other important things with the teachers before heading to class at 8:00 am. Depending on your skills, interest and demand you will be supporting or teaching yourself any subject with is taught in the school, like mathematics, history, geography, art and so on. Mainly the school needs support in the field of English and Computer lessons as well as afternoon activities. School ends at 1:00 pm and depending on the day you might go home after this or you stay in school supporting the tuiton class, preparention for exams or conduct afternoon activities like playing games, foodball, doing handicraft or reading clubs.
