Teacher at Community School

This chance provides you an opportunity to help motivate and guide orphans and vulnerable children towards a successful career path and ultimately a better future!

What we do?

We strive to meet 'educational needs' of of orphans and vulnerable children by providing them quality and affordable education. Our school is guided by 3 key principles - mental nourishment, physical development and spiritual enrichment:

  • Mental nourishment - our team of dedicated teachers always ensure that students under their tutelage receive quality education to stimulate their minds and further enhance their mental development.
  • Physical development - all work and no play made Jack a dull boy. Every Friday, students gather at the playground for sessions of physical education.  They are made to undergo rigorous exercises that enhance their physical development.
  • Spiritual enrichment - each day, students assemble in the school hall for a time of devotion before lessons commence.

Our History

Before Beautiful Gate Community School got established in February, 2003. Prior to the school being set up in Robert shanty compound, there wasn't a single school in the area. Most of the times, children would be seen running around the compound in tattered clothes and unkempt hair during school hours or playing on rubbish dumps while sifting for any useful scrap material that they could convert into toys. Initially, the school operated from a two-bedroomed house within the township, with 45 students in attendance and three members of staff. Two years later, funds were sourced to build a proper school at its current location in the outskirts of the Township. The school has since grown and can now boast of 600 students from baby class through to grade 9! The average age of students in the school would normally range from 3 to 18 years. .Whereas most of these children have either lost one or both parents, some of them come from poverty stricken homes whereby a single meal is the order of the day. In order to enable these children concentrate in class, we endearvor to offer them meals whenever they report for school. Apart from this, we also provide school uniforms and shoes to those who may not afford such.

Currently, there are about 15 teachers working in our school either as full time staff or volunteers assisted by a team of 4 auxiliary workers.

Our Mission

"Molding children into responsible citizens by nourishing them mentally, physically and spiritually through quality and affordable education."

Our Vision

To raise the next generation of professionals in diverse capacities as judges, lawyers, doctors, accountants, teachers, engineers, architects etc even from the unlikeliest of places such as Robert shanty compound.

Goals of our school

Our goals are in line with the following four (4) 2015 millennium development goals on education:

  1. Expand early childhood care and education - we have a deliberate policy to encourage the girl child to be in school to demystify traditional beliefs that a woman's place is in the kitchen and not in the classroom.
  2. Increase adult literacy by 50 percent - we have introduced adult literacy targeting mainly those that may have dropped out of school for one reason or another to curve a better future for themselves.
  3. Achieve gender parity - this can only be attained if women are granted equal access to education.
  4. Improve the quality of education - although we are a community school, we are always keen to hire enthusiastic and highly qualified individuals.

Role of volunteers

In the face of limited financial capacity, volunteers always come in handy to compliment the efforts of non-profit organizations in whatever capacity they are called to serve. In this particular case, it is anticipated that volunteers will bring along a wealth of skills and talents to help inculcate knowledge into the minds of orphans and vulnerable children. However, due to cultural, language and societal barriers that may arise, volunteer teachers may be assigned to work hand in hand with local staff as assistant teachers until such a time that they are able to execute duties on their own.

Suitable for

Typical day

We commence duties at 07.30 hours. Before classes begin at 08.00 hours, there's always school assembly where school management take time to communicate vital information to students. Classes go on a tea break at 10.00 hours and again for lunch at 12.00 hours. We would then finish off at 16.00 hours.
Volunteers shall obviously work with local people as assistant teachers. Possible tasks for teachers would include but not limited to the following:
  • Preparing lesson materials, bulletin board displays, exhibits, equipment, and demonstrations.
  • Presenting subject matter to students under the direction and guidance of teachers, using lectures, discussions, or supervised role-playing methods.
  • Tutoring and assisting children individually or in small groups in order to help them master assignments and to reinforce learning concepts presented by teachers.
  • Supervising students in classrooms, halls, cafeterias, school yards, and gymnasiums, or on field trips.
  • Conducting demonstrations to teach such skills as sports, dancing, and handicrafts.
  • Distributing teaching materials such as textbooks, workbooks, papers, and pencils to students.
  • Distributing tests and homework assignments, and collect them when they are completed.
  • Enforcing administration policies and rules governing students.
  • Grading homework and tests, and compute and record results, using answer sheets or electronic marking devices.
  • Instructing and monitor students in the use and care of equipment and materials, in order to prevent injuries and damage.
  • Observing students' performance, and record relevant data to assess progress.
  • Organizing and label materials, and display students’ work in a manner appropriate for their eye levels and perceptual skills.
  • Organizing and supervise games and other recreational activities to promote physical, mental, and social development.
  • Participating in teacher-parent conferences regarding students’ progress or problems.
  • Planning, preparing, and developing various teaching aids such as bibliographies, charts, and graphs.
