La Comunidad Que Construimos

Teacher for Children & Youth

Trujillo, Peru

We are looking for passionate volunteer teachers to help disadvantaged kids build self-esteem through our educational English, art and P.E. programs in local schools.

About the Program

Being a volunteer at La Comunidad que Construimos is an incredibly rewarding experience and a unique opportunity to make a difference in the lives of children and their families here in Trujillo. You will work with an official NGO, dedicated teachers and educators in a local state school (Colegio) that have now served the community for years. We see the English Teacher role as crucial to the success of our organization, as our volunteer teachers provide children with the necessary tools to build their self-esteem and confidence through our educational programs and workshops in the Alto Trujillo district on a daily basis.

Responsibilities:

  • Teach English to children from 6 years old to 12 years old, 6 different school levels.
  • Prepare lesson plans and share best learning practice with other volunteers and the Director.
  • Take part in fun extracurricular activities that include sightseeing, camping, surfing and sandboarding
  • Spend time with children and their families at our various projects.
  • Attend weekly meetings with other volunteers and the Director.
  • Set an example to the students and act as a role model.
  • Be a responsible ambassador for our organization.
  • Be passionate and enthusiastic!

Requirements:

  • Minimum commitment of one month in Peru - essential
  • English fluency - essential
  • Basic level of Spanish.
  • Positive attitude and adaptable.
  • Problem-solving.
  • Experience teaching and/or working with groups of children.
  • High school diploma.
  • An engaging personality with good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Open-minded and driven.
  • Ability to work with a team.
  • First Aid certificate not required but preferred.
  • Experience of living and working in Latin America not required but preferred.

Benefits of volunteering with us:

  • Gain valuable skills and a unique experience in teaching kids in Peru.
  • Be part of an amazing community that aims at making a positive change.
  • Induction, training and on-going support from our team members.
  • Housing (at the volunteer house or with a host family)
  • Get a reference and a certificate upon completion of your mission
Volunteers are very welcome to bring any equipment they would like to donate. Stationery, school supplies, schoolbags and books in English are extremely appreciated. Once your application is accepted, it is best to discuss this with our Volunteer Coordinator.

Typical day

Teaching takes place in a local Primary state school (Colegio) in the Florencia de Mora district each day at set hours between 7.30-12:30, Monday - Friday, in Alto Trujillo, which is only a 30-min journey to the centre of Trujillo, easily accessible by bus. Don't worry you will not start at 7.30am every day! We work around the timetable provided by the schools.

You will teach kids aged 6 to 12 years-old in groups of up to 20 children. There are 6 primary levels in total, of 2 classes each. There are around 250 kids at the school. It is important to note that each class is assigned a primary teacher. Unfortunately none of them is able to teach the English curriculum. Sometimes up to 4 classes have an English class at the same time, so depending on the number of volunteers we have, you may well have the chance to organise a super fun art or P.E. activity with a large group of kids, with the support of their respective Primary teachers to supervise that it all goes well, of course.

After teaching, you can choose to stay and help the kids who struggle the most with their homework during the after-school program. Alternatively, and in collaboration with our non-profit partner Concrete Jungle Foundation, you can choose to promote positive relationships and self-esteem through a skateboarding class at the school. It is a great and fun way to reach out to the kids who regularly miss class in order to improve school attendance.

Details on Arrival

We welcome volunteers throughout the year!

Our Program Director will come and fetch you wherever you arrive: at the airport or at the bus station in Trujillo.

Full induction and on-going support is provided both in English and Spanish.

Free-time activities

As a touristic place, Trujillo has several locations to visit and enjoy. From ancient constructions such as Chan Chan or Huaca del Sol y la Luna to wonderful beaches such as Huanchaco or Puerto Chicama where surf is very popular, Chicama has the longest left wave in the world.

Trujillo's city centre is also a very beautiful place due to its colonial buildings and architectural constructions including La Plaza de Armas, the biggest one in Peru. In the city centre there are also nice restaurants, shops, bars and cafes. Trujillo has 2 big malls where you can buy almost anything that you want as food, clothing, etc...

If you want to buy cheaper products, there are several traditional markets that you can go to. Huanchaco, the most popular and touristic beach in Trujillo, offers fantastic sunsets and landscapes, great waves to practice surf, beach volleyball and other sports.

At night, Huanchaco turns out to be the best place for partying in town, with nice bars where you can learn to dance Salsa, Bachata and Reggaeton while you hang out with friends and meet friendly people. Trujillo is the third biggest city in Peru and has plenty more attractions to enjoy...

As it is in a strategical location, it is very easy and cheap to travel around. Within the city the main transportation mean are buses and taxis, the buses cost 1sol which is around 0.30 US dollar and taxis cost between 5 and 10 soles (1.52 - 3.04 US dollar) according to the distance. Do not miss the opportunity to enjoy the semi tropical weather of Trujillo and have an amazing experience volunteering with us!
