You can either teach preschool or the primary school. But you can also work as a care giver in the nursery and crèche
Ghana is a country of dramatic change and optimism, which is reflected in the schools in which we work. Though they are often over-crowded, understaffed and under-funded, a real enthusiasm and a hope for the future seem to permeate through the students.
It is going to be hard to maintain this as more and more skilled teachers continue to leave for EUROPE and AMERICA in search of lucrative teaching contract, because of this we welcome any assistance from volunteers to teach basic causes like English, French, Computer, Mathematics or Science from pre-schools, primary, junior high or senior high schools.
Future First Academy is a school for the the kids of the Kayayeis, located at old fadama (agbogbloshie).
These Kayayeis are group of ladies who mostly work in big markets by carrying other people’s items for a fee. The ladies mostly come from the north of Ghana to Accra for greener pastures.
These ladies come to Accra without anybody in mind to settle with. Some sleep on the streets, in front of stores, markets among others as a result they end up pregnant and give birth without any help. They do not have any family to assist them and as a result of this they had to carry their children at their backs the entire day while working. The less privileged group consists of both, children of the single mothers (Kayayeis) and children of families in the community who face similar problems.
You don’t need qualification to be part of our teaching project just basic knowledge of the subjects, you can volunteer for a minimum of two weeks and a maximum of 12months.
Your contribution will go a long way to make a difference in a Child's life. You don’t even need to speak the local language where you are volunteering. The program is open to all volunteers whether you are on a gap year, at university or wanting a career break. All we require is a good standard of spoken English.
You will find a warm welcome awaits you from our students. Assisting teachers in schools with limited resources provides an engaging environment for educating children and teenagers. Your ideas, your energy, and your presence are exciting for students and invigorating for the teachers and parents. The students are full of curiosity about the world around them and they welcome your perspective, you will also serve or be seen as a positive role models to students.
The school has a pre school and a primary class.
The pre-school includes creche, nursery and kindargarten whiles the primary starts from class 2 to class 5.
As a volunteer you will either help out in the creche, nursery or kindergarten.
You can assist the teachers in the primary school and implement extra classes. The topics are Maths, English, Science, Social Studies, Creative Arts and ICT. You may also be involved in creative projects and non-classroom based activities, which help create a stimulating learning environment.
Ghana has so much to offer to volunteers, with its rich culture, festivals, food, art & craft centers, castles & forts, long sandy beaches, national parks, waterfalls, rain forest and other interesting places to visit.
The DACF management organizes several trips to discover Ghana’s culture, nature and most relaxing places.
Our driver and a staff member will pick you up from the airport and bring you to the place where you will stay. You will visit the project together with other experienced volunteers on the next workday.
You can choose to stay with a local host family or stay in our volunteer house. It depends on the location where you want to be placed. Our main location is the volunteer house in Accra, where you will be living with around 16 other volunteers from all over the world. We have four bedrooms with two bunk beds each and two shared bathrooms. The volunteer house is located in a very safe area in Ghana.
We have a cook in the volunteer house who prepares three meals a day for all the volunteers. We will prepare special food for you, if you have to follow a special diet. The food is mostly western, but we also offer local dishes to our volunteers. If you are placed in a host family you might have more local dishes.
