Teaching Assistant At a Pre- & Primary School

Support teachers in their every day routine and help to improve the quality of teaching.

Like everything in Tanzania, the level of education someone can achieve usually depends on the parent's income. Kindergartens in Tanzania can not be compared to Kindergartens in Europe or North America. The focus is on learning the basic skills of reading, writing and arithmetic, therefore, you will mainly be active in teaching the children. But there will also be time to play with the children and do some recreational work. Also primary schools work differently, with ex-cathedra teaching and monotonous copying from the blackboard.

At the Nuru Pre- & Primary School almost 120 children are being taken care of at this pre- & primary school, both being located on the same compound, aged three to 14 years. The children are coming mainly from the area around the school, but some are also coming from far due to the good reputation of the school.

Primarily you will assist  the teachers in teaching and playing with the children. As required you will be working the various classes. You can choose if you one want to work in the preschool, the primary school or want to support both.  In the preschool you will teach the basics of English, mathematics, reading and writing. In the primary school you will teach all subjects. In the afternoon you have time to play with the children, football, handicraft, games or what ever comes to your mind. Let your creativity run freely!

Typical day

A typical day starts at 8:00 am in the morning. You will support the teachers in the class where they need you the most. Probably during your stay you will be having one class which you will support for the whole time but depending on demand that might change.
You will support the teachers during every lesson, making sure that the children listen or also do one on one teaching with children who need more support. The Preschool finishs at 12:00 pm and the Primary School at 3:30 pm.
In the afternoon you can play with the children, help them during tuiton and homework or help fixing things in and around the school.
