GoEco

Teaching Assistant for Local Children

by GoEco

Teach the local youth valuable skills and knowledge; helping them to create sustainable opportunities for their futures.

Fiji is a country with an extensive history of unrest, but despite its socio-economic, political, and cultural struggles in the past, has now emerged as a stable and well-established country with a lot to offer. It is a compilation of 332 paradise-like islands surrounded by warm, tropical water and beautiful coral reefs. Volunteers will be placed in Dawasamu, which is a region on the mainland island of Viti Levu, in Fiji

About the Project
Education is one of the most fundamental and crucial ways to make an impact on a struggling community. To empower the young generation on the island to grow and develop intellectually and physically would ultimately be giving their community the necessary basics to thrive in the world. This program aims to give the people of Fiji the tools to create a sustainable and rewarding life for themselves and their community on their island.

Volunteer Work and Contribution
On this project, you will be working with young children from all over the island at the local government-funded school. English is the official language of the school, but is often not the language spoken at home, resulting in a lack of confidence in their English language skills.

Suitable for

Singles
Couples

Typical day

As a volunteer, you will have multiple purposes in the school

  • Assist the teachers with their work load in planning and executing lessons and giving direct guidance to students in academic subjects such as English, Math, and Science.
  • Give the students practice and experience conversing with a native English speaker in order to boost their confidence and get them speaking more.
  • Prepare activities and lessons in Physical Education, Music, and Art – subjects which are included in the required curriculum but are often overlooked.
Volunteers will be working Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm. Weekends and evenings you will have off for lesson planning, chores, social activities, or exploring the area.

These include travelling to Taveuni (known as the “garden of Fiji”) or visiting the capital city of Suva.
