Teaching Assistant

We assist rural schools that is in desperate need of extra help in their multi-grade classes. Volunteers needed to help with English, computer, maths, sports & arts.

About the school

The volunteer program is build around assisting small rural farm schools that need teacher assistance as each teacher need to teach 2-3 grades per classroom. The school is situated between wheat farms and fully enclosed and locked during school time for safety. You live walking distance from the school and you will be accompanied by students also walking home.

The volunteer will work directly with the principle, teachers and children. You will receive your instructions of what to teach from the principle with all the necessary study material. Your teaching material and what is expected of you will be communicated before hand and therefore you will have enough time to prepare.

Because the teacher has to focus on more than 1 grade children in their class there are often children that is deprived of extra care because of that. Like most of us these children also face difficulties every day, not just with their school work, but also at home when there are often no parents or illiterate grandparents that cannot help them with homework.

Other tasks

We want to fill the gap and help these children to receive that extra care that every child so desperately needs. The volunteer not only interact with the children on a classroom level, but also on a social level when they play and interact with them during break time on the school grounds and sometimes there are also other programs, if it falls in your duration of stay with the founding members of One Heart.

During break time the children play sports like cricket, tennis, netball, soccer, chess and fingerboard.

The teacher assistant volunteer program is not the only program that One Heart does and your help could sometimes be needed for other individual projects as well, but it all involves the youth and women of the rural area that we serve.

Suitable for

Typical day

A typical day for a volunteer would start at their "home away from home" which is at the founding members residence and walking distance from the school where the volunteer program is executed.

The volunteer becomes part of the family and make use of the home facilities like it would be their own. Therefore they will make themselves breakfast which could be anything from porridge, cereal, yogurt, fruit or eggs and  toast. They will pack their own lunch bag like a sandwich with fruit and juice or water.

The volunteer will leave home about 8:00 the morning and walk about 8 minutes to the school. There he/she will join up with the school team and see that children is fed and clothes are dried (in winter season) before school starts.

The principle will link up the volunteer with subjects or activities which is closest to the volunteers interests and strong points. That could vary anything from English, maths, computer classes, sports, art, music, admin, etc.

During break time the volunteers interact on a more social level with the children while playing sports with them outside.

School break up at 14h00 and volunteer leaves with the rest of the teachers at 14h30.

Back at home the volunteer have their own leisure time and can make use of the swimming pool or satelite TV until it is supper time for the whole family at about 18h30.

Weekends the host family can take the volunteer to nearby sites as a daytrip with prior arrangements.
