Teaching Assistant in Urban Districts

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia show on map

Agency | Global Nomadic

Teach alongside local teachers in Mongolia
and help run classes for children to advance their English skills.

The project

The project is located in Bayanzurkh District in the outskirts area of Ulaanbaatar, and the beneficiaries love to meet people from overseas and learn different cultures. Teachers, with or without experience, can make very significant and worthwhile contributions to the kids living in the centre. You must love children and understand their behaviour, as you will be surrounded with loads of them everyday and their friendliness can sometimes become over-exuberant, but they are children after all.

The aims & objective is to help the kids grow in their confidence and gather educational support which will help them in many ways in the future.

On this teaching program you will have the opportunity to teach children a variety of English based subjects, in a beautiful Mongolian setting.

The week will consist of preparing lessons and teaching children at a local school. You will also be able to teach a whole class on your own or with other participants at the local school and experience a different lifestyle.

The location

Mongolia, the world’s most sparsely populated fully sovereign country in the world, is landlocked between China and Russia and covers approximately the same territory as the historical Outer Mongolia. It is a very safe country to visit and one of the world’s last undiscovered travel destinations. Greeted by the traditional hospitality of the local nomads, you can experience forests, deserts, blue skies, crystal clear rivers, lakes and vast open-air spaces. The country’s capital city, Ulaanbaatar, is a beautiful city of contrasts which vibrates with life. It is the largest city and home to almost half of the country’s total population, which is dispersed at 1.7 people per km². Now settled at the junction of the Tuul and Selbe rivers, the city was founded in the 17th century as a nomadic Buddhist monastic centre. It is a major manufacturing centre and since the transition of the country to market economy it has witnessed significant growth.

Known as the "Land of the Eternal Blue Sky" or "Country of Blue Sky" because of its sunny days during most of the year, Mongolia enchants travellers with its majestic vast empty spaces and nature. The highly continental climate combines warm summers with dry, very cold long winters. From November to March the temperature is below zero and winter nights with -40°C are common. In the summers, extremes can reach +40°C in the Gobi Desert and +33°C in Ulaanbaatar. In many regions of the country monthly temperature variations of 45°C are common.

Typical day

On your first days you will learn about Mongolia and its ancient culture, acquire some basic language skills to communicate with the local people and explore the city’s sights such as the National Museum and the ancient bazaars with their unique sounds and colours. On Wednesday you will begin to teach at the schools starting at 9 a.m. After breakfast you will proceed to the school or the community where the project takes place to meet your coordinators. You will teach the activities planned for the day for 3-4 hours. You will return for lunch at the centre and the afternoon you will spend planning the activities for the following day.

If you decide to continue a second week, your schedule will be similar, starting at 9:00 a.m with teaching the activities planned together with your coordinator.
