Teaching Children in Urban Surroundings

Education Junior School Teaching

Join this program to assist local teachers in urban areas. You will assist the teachers in different schools and enhance students' skills .

Why it is important

Kenya volunteer and travel  offers a wide variety of teaching volunteer work opportunities wherein volunteers can work in primary as well as secondary school, depending on the eligibility and comfort level.

In most of the cases, volunteers help in improving the vocabulary as well as spoken English skills of the students. You may also be involved in teaching other subjects such as Computers/IT skills, Maths and Geography to the students depending on the need of the social welfare organization.

Who we are looking for

Volunteers working under the teaching volunteer program needs to be open minded, flexible and prepared to face challenges. In some projects, volunteers find themselves teaching in an open air classroom and the need for creativity and improvisation is paramount. While volunteering in the teaching placement, volunteers can also assist in extra curricular activities such as sports and games. You don’t have to be a teacher to volunteer  on our English teaching projects. Volunteers just need to have a good command over written and conversational English.

We have a wide variety of programs available in urban areas . You can choose to Teach English in primary schools or secondary schools,.. Our programs are available throughout the year, with flexible start dates and program duration. Volunteers can choose to volunteer for a minimum of up-to one month to six months.

About the program

At Hope mission centre, we believe that every child deserves an education. Every day across most urban areas,  volunteers are shaping futures by participating in Teaching Projects. Whether you are new to the field or have some experience, every volunteer teacher has something to offer. Most of the schools that we work with have little access to new skills and or expertise and the students will be excited to have you in their classroom. This is a great opportunity for you to realize your own potential as a resource! Use your skills in English to improve their conversation and use their curiosity to encourage them to practice with you.The program is all about teaching children/students English, reading skills and other subjects.

Your role as a volunteer

Assisting local teachers with classes or leading your own classes and teaching children, teenagers, and adults subjects such as English, IT, social studies, history and science. In primary schools ,the students are aged 3-12 years and for secondary schools students are aged 14-18 years. Some schools in urban areas the population of students is starting from 30-600 in  number. Most public schools the capacity of students is more than the teachers can handle .The private and community schools are the ones that welcome volunteers and this is where volunteers will be placed. The classes accommodate 20-25 students per class. The volunteer will be working in urban based slum schools --Nairobi,Kisii, Kajiado and Nakuru. Our security assessment showed these locations are safe.

Accommodation and Safety

Where they will be living there is hospitals and police post around. In case there is a problem of health or security we are able to solve it.We have screened host families and we have made them to be part of hope mission centre. This creates confidence to our volunteers and the way they are being handled and treated. We expect volunteers to observe rules and regulation being given to them during orientation and they expect us too to give them maximum protection during their stay here in Kenya. It is optional if one has a laptop ,books or a camera  can donate to school of his/her choice

Free-time activities

During the weekends, volunteers have free time to relax or take the opportunity to explore Nairobi, wider Kenya and Eastern Africa. Long weekends can be taken to travel further afield (i.e. Mombasa, Uganda or Tanzania), or to embark on a safari.

If volunteers wish to volunteer over the weekends, they can join local teams to visit orphanages and spend time playing with and entertaining the children. Sunday is a religious day of rest. If you wish, you can accompany your host family to their local church, as a Kenyan church service is a unique and special experience for many volunteers.
