Teaching Companion for Nursery-School Children

Suva, Fiji show on map

Agency | GoEco

Come to the island of Viti Levu to inspire and motivate local children who are at the start of their school careers.

Fiji's capital Suva is a port city located on the island of Viti Levu. As the largest city in the South Pacific, it has become the country's commercial, administrative and political center. This bustling metropolis sits on a hilly peninsula with Suva Harbour to the west and Laucala Bay to the east. The only relatively flat section of the city is Victoria Parade, a thin strip of land where most of the restaurants, cafés and shops are located.

Suva's residents are extremely multicultural, with an increasing number of Indo-Fijian, Australians and New Zealanders. Aside from the locals, the capital frequently hosts a number of Asian sailors granted liberty and university students from around the Pacific.

Due to a shortage of local teachers in Fiji, the project aims to provide kindergartens with international volunteers to help with large classes (4 to 7 year olds). Finding additional help locally is difficult because most Fijians can’t afford to travel around the island, especially to isolated villages.

Most classes are quite large so it’s very challenging for teachers to give each child the individual attention they deserve. Therefore, international volunteers are highly valued for their dedication and commitment to these children.

Orientation Week
This jam-packed orientation will familiarize you with Fijian culture and customs. You can expect a city tour of Suva with visits to the fresh produce market and the famous Suva Harbor. You’ll also have the opportunity to learn basic Fijian and participate in a carving and painting class. Before the week’s end, you will have experienced a wide range of exciting activities to get you ready for your placement.
Volunteer Work and Contribution
There is a deep appreciation for international volunteers who come to assist teachers in kindergarten classrooms. As a volunteer, you will be placed at one of the many kindergartens in need of assistance to help care for the children, alleviating the daily pressures on the teacher.

Your duties as a volunteer may include
  • Teaching basic English
  • Planning activities to help with English skills
  • Playing games with the children
  • Organizing dynamic age appropriate activities
  • Developing students’ conversational skills

Typical day

A typical day
You can expect to volunteer around five hours a day, Monday to Friday. Your days will begin at 8:30 am with English lessons and recreational activities. After lunch, you will help with the lesson plan for the next day. Weekends are free.

During some holidays, the children will be out of school and the project will not be running as scheduled. During this time, volunteers will be primarily involved in cleaning tasks, renovations and leading the Kid's Club. The holidays for 2016 are as follows:
Term 1 Break : 22nd April - 9th May
Term 2 Break:  12th August - 29th August
Term 3 Big Break:  25th November - January 2017
Full school closure: 19th December - 2nd January 2017*
*Please note: it is not possible to book any dates which overlap with the full school closure
2 weeks before examinations, some of the schools may not have regular classes, as the students will be busy with revision. The volunteers will then be responsible for helping with revision or join in the renovation and cleaning project.

Free-time activities

If you choose to stay in Suva for the weekend, the center offers a variety of activities, including:
