Mostly, schools in Ghana are currently struggling with overcrowded classes, lack of learning materials as well as lack of skilled teachers. As a volunteer you will help to empower students by giving them the necessary skills they need for the future and to make their voice heard.
We offer opportunities for volunteers to assist with teaching in the following field:
• Pre-School
• Primary School
• Junior Secondary School

Subjects vary from language and literacy, science, computer skills, maths, environmental studies, physical development, and psychosocial skills to creative activities such as music, dance, and art.
This teaching program does not include a training process; therefore the volunteer is expected to be capable of conducting classes independently or assist teachers in the classroom.
Community School
The educational/ teaching program in Ghana is not available all-round the year. It is available during the curriculum sessions of the schools: January –April, May-July, September-December.

Several schools are included in our volunteer teaching project in Ghana. All details can be provided to volunteers upon completion of the registration process

This role is suitable for a flexible, mature, caring, motivated and self-directed person.
A teaching qualification is not required but volunteers need to be much confident in the above listed subjects and preferably have or be studying towards a university degree. Your level of experience will decide the age group that you work with.

Typical day

The public school system in Ghana runs on this daily schedule 8am- 3pm. However the private alternative provides extended hours from 3pm-5pm.

08.00am – School start

10:00 am – Intermission

10:30am - 12:00 pm – Classes

12.00pm-01.00pm – Lunch Break

01.00pm-03.00pm - Classes

03:00 pm - Pupils are released 

Volunteers will supervise local teachers in preparing weekly lecture notes, teaching students and organizing sports activities. Teaching advantages include providing literacy, numeracy, peace education, and creative activities such as drama, dance, and art. Teaching materials will not be available, volunteers are requested to bring or purchase materials in Ghana.

Minimum Age
In order to join the program you need to be at least 18 years old on the program start date. There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s).

Your helping hand will be required on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 08:00 - 15:00

Free-time activities

Weekends, are free days to volunteers. You may choose to travel out of town to see the many interesting sights and sounds in other parts of Ghana or hang out with your fellow volunteer(s) and/or locals in the neighborhood.

Visa, flights, travel insurance or vaccinations are NOT included in the program fees.

Airport Pickup

On the day (or night) of your arrival, SAMBA AFRICA VOLUNTEERING (SAVO) staffs will be at the airport to welcome you and transfer you to a hotel with air-conditioned rooms and restaurant only in the night of your arrival, Orientation and transportation to your assigned placement will be done the next morning following your arrival day but arrival in day time you will be transported to your destination (KUMASI).


The accommodation belongs to the host-families. There are always other people in the house as well; and they would be willing to give you some assistance. You would be placed in the same location with another volunteer - unless you specifically state that you like to be stayed alone. Participants coming as couple or pair will not be placed with other volunteers in the same bedroom. The volunteer(s) have their separate room - with a lock and key. Its advisable to come along with a mosquitoes net.

Food & Beverages

Volunteers will be served three meals daily. Breakfast is usually tea/ coffee/ oats or corn porridge and bread with jam/ butter/ egg omelet. Lunch; plantain or rice or yam with vegetable stew or similar. Dinner; yam, pasta or plantain with vegetable sauce or stew or soup. For dessert you'd be served an orange or pineapple.

You can volunteer at the project site in Kumasi/Ghana between 4 weeks and 50 weeks. Please note that the above shown program fees are estimated and subject to exchange rate fluctuations. Samba Africa Voluntary Organization (SAVO) will tell you your final price during your application process.
Average Fees
Deposit (15%)
The deposit is simply to reserve your volunteer placement. Payments are handled by PayPal, our trusted global payment provider. If you don't have a PayPal account, you can also pay using a credit card.
Final Payment (85%)
Your final payment will be agreed with Samba Africa Voluntary Organization (SAVO) during the application process. Common solutions are either via bank transfer or a cash payment at the project site.
