Phnom Penh, Cambodia show on map

Provide essential teaching to under-resourced schools in Cambodia. Help local children to break the poverty cycle through education.

The program

International volunteers play a direct role in changing lives on this amazing program. Love Volunteers work in a school in the country’s capital city, Phnom Penh, assisting in the classroom teaching English skills and other subjects such as computer skills or where the volunteers skills lie. Volunteers are encouraged to bring with them games, songs or teaching materials so they have a true personal impact on the children they teach - fresh ideas are always welcome! The children this amazing volunteer program works with are disadvantaged, often living in poverty volunteers from developed nations will have to see to believe. For young Cambodians, English language and basic computer skills are essential prerequisites for entry into many jobs but the opportunity to learn these is not available to everybody, principally due to cost. By volunteering to teach in Cambodia, participants are giving vital assistance to youngsters towards attaining better future employment.

Goals of this Project:

  • Provide essential teaching to under-resourced schools in Cambodia
  • Provide an educational foundation for vulnerable children to build on and break the poverty cycle
  • Improve the future prospects of the children in Cambodia
  • Enable inter-cultural exchange which benefits both locals and international volunteers alike.

How you can help

This program is crucial to the lives of the many impoverished children it supports. Without additional support these children may never have the opportunity to succeed with their education, and in life.  Volunteers will work directly with the children, teaching them essential English skills, and on other areas such as: delivering lessons in basic computer skills, mathematics, economics, teaching languages such as, music, arts, basketball, drama, geography and health. There will also be a component of producing lesson plans; preparing and evaluating tests and helping with clerical and translation duties. If a volunteer has other language skills, particularly Spanish, Japanese or German – they are welcome to teach these – as these languages are also important to the countries growing tourism market and will prove to be important for future job opportunities. While fundamentally helping children with essential skills, this placement will be a hugely rewarding life experience for any international volunteer.

Volunteers will contribute in a number of ways on this program and can expect to undertake the following tasks:

  • Teach children English and assist in a variety of subjects
  • Play sports and other games with the children
  • Work with students on projects and activities

Free-time activities

Cambodia's vibrant capital has overcome the hardships of a violent past to once again become a "Pearl of Asia". Whilst tourists are still drawn by the memory of the Khmer Rouge and their horrific Killing Fields (and rightly so, this should never be forgotten), the city itself is taking a cue from it's majestic river and moving on.  Chic, bustling bars and restaurants line the riverfront and streets beyond with patrons watching boats cruising, motorbikes and tuk-tuks buzzing and pedestrians strolling on by. The Cambodian people are courageous and incredibly hospitable and a stay in this city is not to be forgotten.

Accommodation

Volunteers on this program are accommodated in a large, comfortable and well-equipped Volunteer House in central Phnom Penh. A great way to connect with other volunteers in a safe and social environment!

Rooms are shared by up to 4 volunteers, split by gender and each room has its own bathroom with western-style facilities and hot showers. Fans are available for comfort in the summer months and bed linen is provided so volunteers need only bring personal toiletries and towels.

The ground floor of the house has been set up as a spacious communal area volunteers can utilize to relax and socialize. WiFi is available free of charge in all areas of the house and laundry services are available for a small charge. Easy!

Guesthouse
Food & Beverages

Volunteers can also request to stay with a local host family who have been carefully selected and are experienced in caring for international volunteers. Host family members will speak some English and provide comfortable, private rooms. Lockable storage will be available for valuables.

Volunteers on our wonderful programs in Phnom Penh are well catered for with breakfast, lunch and dinner available daily at the Volunteer House. Depending on the placement location, volunteers may opt to take lunch at their project site during the week.

Breakfast will consist of a self-serve offering of coffee, tea and juice, bread, crackers, jam and fruit. Depending on your volunteer schedule you can either eat-in or have items wrapped to take with you.

Lunch is typically eaten at the project site, either provided by the placement or eaten out at any of the affordable and accessible local eateries. A great way to sample delicious local fare! Lunch is also available daily at the Volunteer House.

Dinner is a time to relax and socialize with other volunteers and share experiences in the comfort of the Volunteer House. Meals normally include a soup or salad with a main dish of rice, noodles, fresh vegetables, chicken, beef, fish or pork and a small dessert.

If you have special dietary requirements please let us know ahead of time so that we can advise the local team. Vegetarianism can be a strange concept to people in Cambodia and, although we are happy to host vegetarians, it is difficult to guarantee a completely vegetarian diet. Strict vegetarians and vegans should consider this when preparing and be ready to help with the cooking and shop for additional items if necessary.

Please note that all meals provided in the volunteer house are included in the program fees. When eating out it is the volunteer’s responsibility to cover the costs.
