Volunteers will be volunteering for about 3-5 hours a day. At a school for primary and secondary students from low economic resources.
Speaking English in Peru is very important due to the good job opportunities it provides to locals. However, many students cannot afford to study another language, especially children. Therefore, our Teaching English program is very important because it gives those who would not normally be able to study English the chance to learn the language.
Our Volunteers will be volunteering at one of our Teaching English projects for about 3-5 hours a day. These projects include schools, community centers, orphanages, and shelters. The people at these projects come from low income families. Please note you may be teaching individually or you may be an assistant teacher in an English class that has a large amount of students.
This program includes assistance in teaching English on the day of your orientation to help to prepare you. Lesson plans are generally not provided to you by the projects. PV Travel provides materials, books and lesson ideas to help you with your classes.
Please expect that your Teaching English project may feel disorganized, understaffed and under funded. It is for these reasons that volunteers are so desperately needed. Also, volunteers may not necessarily teach in front of large classes or in formal classroom settings; teaching can be done in small groups or in a one-on-one format.
While our programs are flexible and can be fit to your requirements, an example of a typical day is as follows:
7:30 AM Breakfast with the host family
8:00 AM Volunteer leaves home and takes public transport (or in some cases walks) to the project with other volunteers and program staff. You will be given a plan for your work. There is usually a tea break and a lunch break. Work and hours are dependent on the project and location that the volunteer is participating in.
2:00 PM-5:00 PM Work at the project usually ends. The volunteer at this point is free to visit and explore the city. When you first arrive you will also have the city tour in the afternoon and the night tour during the evening. You may also want to spend additional time with the children at your project up until the late afternoon.
7-7:30 PM Dinner with the host family.
On the weekend, volunteers have spare time and usually relax or take the opportunity to explore other parts of their local town and Peru. Long weekends can be taken to travel further afield such as Machu Picchu. At PV Travel we organize fun and interesting tours for our volunteers, so just let us know where you would like to go!
We pick volunteers up from the Cusco airport and transfer them to their accommodations. Flight information needs to be sent to us prior arrival in Perú.
Volunteers stay in Host families in order to enhance their volunteers experience, where they will also be able to practice Spanish and go on family trips with the family. Accommodations are based on shared occupancy. (Other options are also available upon request.)
