Teaching English & French

Nablus, Palestinian Territories show on map

Provide free English or French language classes to the disadvantaged people of Palestine.

The program

This wonderful initiative allows local children and youth, who make up the majority of the pupils, to receive tuition completely free of charge.  Volunteers on this program work together with local teachers to provide Palestinian children and youth with educational programs important for growth and development. The main areas of education are languages, arts, technology, and sports. Class sizes are kept small to create an atmosphere that is positive and encouraging, and are held in a wide range of locations — community centers, libraries, private schools, refugee camps, etc. Volunteers may be teaching in any combination of these locations, or across the street from the volunteer accommodation in the two-story English Center, which houses several classrooms, a computer lab, and a lecture hall. With English (or French)  language skills, these children will have a greater chance of employment and will also greatly aid youth into higher education.

Goals of this Project:

  • Provide free English  or French language classes to the disadvantaged people of Palestine
  • Improve the future prospects of the people of Palestine
  • Expose non-English/French speakers to native English/French speakers in order to improve pronunciation and conversational skills
  • Enable inter-cultural exchange which benefits both students and international volunteers alike.

How you can help

Volunteers play an integral role in achieving the goals of this project, greatly assisting students to learn the English or French language. Volunteers from many different backgrounds and skill sets are welcome on this program, though some experience in teaching or working with groups of children is required. Volunteers will be expected to teach one of the core languages (English or French), but in addition volunteers are encouraged to share whatever skills they may have –- whether in the arts, athletics, or IT. This will be an extremely rewarding project for international volunteers, who get to assist some of the most disadvantaged people in the world, in one of the most culturally significant places on earth.

Volunteers will contribute in a number of ways and can expect to undertake the following tasks:

  • Converse in and teach basic English/French to the students
  • Help deliver lessons across a variety  of subjects/hobbies
  • Interact with students in a variety of ways – enabling intercultural exchange

3:15pm Debrief with project supervisor

Free-time activities

As one of Palestine’s largest cities, Nablus has lots to offer! Famous for its bustling markets, Nablus’ rich history lies in its Old City with its distinct stone facades, beautiful architecture, narrow streets and old urban spaces. The population of the old city today number around 20,000. There are two churches, twelve mosques and a Samaritan synagogue in around the densely populated residential areas. The Sooq is a typical colorful and loud Palestinian vegetable market located right in the center of town. Simply look for the tent roofs!

The cities of Bethlehem, Ramallah and Jericho see large numbers of tourists including those on one of the many organized tours. Due to the travel time, these cities would be best suited to a weekend trip. The local project staff will happily advise volunteers about things to see, and the best transport method.

The areas in and around Nablus are filled with sites to visit. The Palestinian village of Sebastia lies some 12 kilometres north of Nablus. Other major Palestinian cities such as Jenin, Tulkarem and Qalqilya are also near Nablus in the north of the country. The village of Yasoof is the perfect spot for hiking, and is full of beautiful orchards and fresh water springs.

Because of ongoing conflict in this area of the world, travelers should take notice of travel advisories issued by various embassies before undertaking travel here. Relatively large numbers of international tourists and volunteers visit the West Bank without any incident. However, the situation has the potential to deteriorate. We recommend you consult travel advice regularly.
