Try your hand at teaching English is one of the two schools our organization is working with in Southern India.
You will be based in a local home stay and help teach in one of the schools that have been established to provide a complete educational package for children from the poorest families. And as a teaching volunteer (working side by side with the Indian teacher) you will play a vital role in helping the children improve their spoken skills and confidence to help build their future. Most of your time will be spent either assisting the teacher in various forms through taking a class, helping the students with their work or working with a student struggling with a particular aspect of the course. There will be plenty of time for student interaction so please take time to speak with them as many will want to know about your home country.
Now the school you will be volunteering with is a basic rural Indian government school near Bangalore and the students attending are usually from the poorer communities surrounding the area. And the age groups range from years 1 to 10 and depending on your confidence and ability you will be invited to teach any of these ages. With a main aim being for you to be comfortable in this because it will be passed on to the students in their enthusiasm to improve their spoken English and comprehension. But what is just as important is the interaction with the pupils at all levels because these children want to learn and just talking about where you are from encourages them to learn more about the outside world.
If you have skills in other fields then please let our team
know because the aim is to help these children with a rounded education and we
will use your talents to do this. Any skills in computer training or sports are readily welcome and be used extensively in the classrooms.
The project is very close to a major tourist area of Southern India so on your days off its worth exploring the area. And depending how far you are willing to travel there are other activities like diving & snorkelling.
You will be met at the airport by a member of the organization and usually they will be waiting at the arrival lounge and will have a card with your name on it. Then it takes several hours to reach the project so there is plenty of time for questions about the project.
Basic accommodation with a local family with at least one person speaking English. Usually you will have a room to yourself but if there are two volunteers on placement you may be asked to share.
As you will be eating with a local family there will be three meals a day breakfast, dinner and tea which will include different types of bread with a mixture of curries. Vegetarians are welcome and can be accommodated very easily as the majority of the curries are vegetable based.
