Want to make a difference? Opportunity to change the life of Sri Lankan's Youth
This program is designed to improve the English of school aged children working in 2 government schools (Pre-School through to High School) as well as the 2 children homes based in Kurunegala. While working within the schools, volunteers are expected to assist the local English language teachers to cover the prescribed syllabus Monday to Friday. The children's level of understanding is quite varied, so be prepared to think outside the square to assist. Formal teaching qualifications are not required, just a love of children & a willingness to help.
Your week day typically starts at 7.00am for a 7.30am school start, school is finished by 1.30pm, return to the home/ accommodation for lunch & then free time with the children at one of the children homes (girls children home and Boys children home). The afternoons are where you can shine, bringing your own personality in interacting & developing a rapport with the children whether that be creative play, sports, dancing or craft. Your weekends are free, you can choose to travel to other parts of Sri Lanka, embracing the rich ethnic diversity, ancient cities & monuments or continue to interact with the children from the homes.
The projects and accommodations are located within 5 km of Kurunegala city which is known as the transport hub in Sri Lanka. All the places of interest and historic can be reached within very short period of time as there is a good transport system connected to the city. World famous Kandy Temple of Tooth (UNESCO heritage site) and Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage can be visited in one day. If you have more time, there is a lot you can do in Kandy. The famous 'Sigiriya' (Lion Rock) known as the 8th wonder of the world and Dambulla Cave Temples (UNESCO heritage sites) are just 2 hours away in a bus. If you have more than two weekends, you can visit lot of places such as Nuwara Eliya, known as the Little England (hill country with water falls, tea plantations etc), lovely sandy beaches for scuba diving and surfing, Kitulgala for White water rafting and many national parks to see wild animals including leopards, elephants, stags and deers etc.
