Teaching English - Refugee Kids

Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan, Malaysia show on map

Agency | INVOLVE Travel

Giving a helping hand to the refugee kids to learn English in a fun and informal way through educational games and activities.

Malaysia hosts one of the largest urban refugee populations in the world. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reported the presence of 150,200 refugees and asylum seekers in the country, 90 percent of which hail from Myanmar. The majority of Myanmar refugees identify as Rohingya (53,900) or Chin (42,710).

Due to the lack of legal recognition means that refugees are unable to obtain residence or work permits; they are excluded from the formal economy and are denied driving or trading licences; they cannot open bank accounts; refugee children cannot attend government schools; and refugee access to healthcare services is limited and expensive.

The core aims and objectives of this project are to help the the refugee children build their confidence and improve their level of English. Like most, the structure of the school day is informal and therefore many of the activities involve playing games and learning language through creative lessons. By having fun and connecting with the children in English, you’ll contribute to a fun and engaging learning environment where the children pick up the language in a natural way. While volunteering you may be involved in:

  • Creating lesson plans
  • Managing English conversation and grammar exercises
  • Teaching informal English classes
  • Playing games and singing songs with the children
  • Other childcare tasks as needed

Typical day

You will leave the volunteer centre 8:00am. You can expect to spend about 6 hours teaching throughout the day from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm. Lunch will be served at the school and you will leave each day at around 3:00 or 3:30pm.
