Teaching in rural school

The program contributes to the academic development of the school and provision of quality education to orphans

Nursery and primary schools level provide classes to children aged 3yrs-14yrs. A volunteer can help with teaching English and other subjects. Teaching experience is not required. You can begin as a teaching assistant and then work in small groups with children in need of extra attention.

School terms vary from year to year but are approximately as follows: February 1 to April 30, and May 20 to August 30, September 15 to early December. Volunteers can assist with the physical upkeep of the school; painting, decorating, mending desks etc. Most important volunteers should try to develop activities/programs that can be sustained in the future. Prior teaching experience is not required; volunteer simply need an open mind, caring spirit and a compassionate nature.

The objective of this program is to contribute to the academic development of the school in order to provide the best opportunity for the orphans to receive quality education. Volunteers support the local teachers; encourage students to learn and play and instill pride in their schooling.

Volunteers live in the beautiful town of Mukono in a family run guesthouse or with the host family in Kalagi, just close to our project. Volunteers will have their own bedroom and shared bathroom. Accommodation is basic but clean and comfortable.

Free-time activities

The hard work volunteers put in during the week undoubtedly warrants some fun and relaxation during evening free time and on the weekends. During the week we organize a variety of activities for volunteers in the evenings.

What's included?
Pre-service (e.g. culture, health talk, program orientation, training etc);

Visa, flights, travel insurance or vaccinations are NOT included in the program fees.

You can volunteer at the project site in Mukono/Uganda between 6 weeks and 24 weeks. Please note that the above shown program fees are estimated and subject to exchange rate fluctuations. Beacon of Hope will tell you your final price during your application process.
Average Fees
Deposit (15%)
The deposit is simply to reserve your volunteer placement. Payments are handled by PayPal, our trusted global payment provider. If you don't have a PayPal account, you can also pay using a credit card.
Final Payment (85%)
Your final payment will be agreed with Beacon of Hope during the application process. Common solutions are either via bank transfer or a cash payment at the project site.
