Akwaaba Volunteers

Teaching Supporter

Teaching in Ghana is a rewarding and unforgettable experience. Join local schools and work alongside teachers to brighten the future of the next generation.

About the Program

Join Akwaaba Volunteers teaching program no matter what your experience, we have something for everyone.

We are working in the local community to try and offer education to all children, no matter what their background, there are many people in Ghana living in poverty that do not have access to education due to lack of money to afford basic fees such as uniform. There is also a high number of young children working on the streets to try and make enough money just to eat.

We have established a school for all of these children to give them a free education, food and extra curricular activities. Through this school, children will graduate and be supported through to high school and university. This will decrease the illiteracy rates in the area as well as giving more children the chance to better their future and learn invaluable lessons and offering them a much wider range of future career options.

During our program, teaching volunteers will be working in a local school from 8am - 3pm. You will either work alongside a local teacher, following the school curriculum for your class, take on the challenge of teaching your own class or help students who are struggling or excelling in one on one / small group sessions . Classes range from nursery to 16 year old of all ages and abilities and all our schools are within a 15 minute drive from the volunteer house. By having volunteers working in the school we are able to increase the number of students attending due to the extra help and therefore are able to get more children into the education system.

We will place you in a school and age group based on your experience and interests but you will have the opportunity to make experience as much school life as possible.

Volunteers do not need any special qualifications or experience, although these are more than welcome, all you need is the enthusiasm to work with children, a good attitude and a desire to make a difference and genuinely change lives. We expect all of our volunteers to come ready to face a challenge, and to have a new experience unlike any other. You should be prepared to be with children and plan a few classroom games or simple exercises in case you need them! Upon arrival you will be able to plan lessons more easily after you meet your students and assess their levels.

We will ensure you have 24 hour support from our committed team in Ghana helping you at placements and at home and to ensure that you make the most out of your experience. Although it is not necessary for you to bring anything any small donations such as pencils/ stationary or other classroom equipment are more than welcome! The more effort you put into your program the more you will get out of it!

The Location

All our volunteers are based in Labadi, a pleasant suburb of Accra, 10 minutes from central Accra and just a 2 minute walk from the beach. We live in a large shared house on a large estate with restaurants, bars, pharmacies, shops and ATMs within walking distance. It is an extremely safe area but we live in a gated compound with security to make you feel more at home. The majority of our schools that we work with are in walking distance of the house to make the biggest impact we can in the community.
