Iracambi

Tree Planting & Reforestation

Rosário da Limeira, Brazil

NGO | Iracambi

Join us and make a difference! Gain firsthand experience in agro-forestry, tree planting, reforestation and contribute to forest conservation.

About the Program

Iracambi has worked with reforesting for more than 15 years. However, we decided we could do better and improve our reforesting efforts adding  to them agroecology concepts and techniques. This, of course, demands more planning and practical work on field with the farmers. We are looking for people who can help us to prepare the seedlings in our nursery - since we had to adapt the species we produce to this new context  -, prepare the land for planting - as we deal mainly with degraded soils - and register all the reforesting data in an effective and organized way so we can keep track of our different recovering areas and keep improving our offer along the years.

Thus, on mondays and fridays the volunteer will help our nursery manager preparing and selecting seedlings in our native tree's nursey. From tuesdays to thursdays our reforesting assistant will spend half of the time working in different small farms, preparing the land to receive the seedlings and also transplanting them as necessary; and the other half planning and registering the activities on field. Saturdays and sundays are usually free, but there might be some work on saturday as well depending on farmers's time availability.

Life at Iracambi

Studying, interning, volunteering or visiting Iracambi provides you with a fantastic opportunity to be part of a lifestyle that is likely very different from what you are used to. You will be sharing the campus space with people of many different nationalities, backgrounds, skills, ages and interests - not to mention a few bugs. Iracambi is what you make it. You may find this a bit different from other volunteer locations, because we aren’t going to tell you what to do. That means that if you want to sit around and do nothing, you can do that, too, though it may get pretty boring. We invite you to participate in our ongoing projects and we encourage you to take responsibility for your own work, experience, lifestyle and for your fellow Iracambistas. If you have your own study project as well, that’s great, and we’ll give you all the space you need for that too. If you have a brilliant idea for something we could or ought do, let’s do it – lots of our visitors have initiated activities. If you are not used to being reasonably self-sufficient, this may not be the best place for you, since a large component of the work here is self-directed. There are always goals to reach and projects to be accomplished: educational exchanges which will give you the chance to make Brazilian friends, helping in the forest nursery, working on forest trails, tree planting and maintenance, water and forest monitoring, construction projects, graphic design… the list is never ending. You are likely to be living with people from several different nationalities, disciplines and work experience. (For example, in October 2014 Iracambi hosted students from Brazil, the US, the Netherlands, Australia, Belgium, Germany, and England, with ages ranging from 18 upwards.) Together with your fellow students you will need to find a mutually agreeable way to run your temporary home. The Research Center is located on a working farm, which includes a large area of native forest as well as tree crops. There are rivers to swim in, mountains to climb, forest trails to hike, and a welcoming local community. There may be set days when we plan to plant, or clear trails, but otherwise the days are your own to do your own projects. A typical day starts with breakfast at 7:30 am and after that the morning is yours to collect data, work on your own project, assemble data, work in the nursery, hike up to the forest reserve, or whatever strikes your fancy. Lunch is at 12 pm and dinner is at 6:30 pm. This leaves you with a large block of time to complete your work or explore the area. After dinner, the evening is all yours. We encourage you to socialize, have bonfires, movie nights or just hang out. We expect you to complete Iracambi-related tasks during the week as the weekends are free time. Some students take weekend trips to nearby places, hike in the national park, camp or do homestays. You will find that we are flexible with our schedule and yours.

Typical day

Volunteers and researchers leave the house for work between 8:30 and 9:00 AM, return for lunch at 12:00 PM to the center and then it's back to work until 5:00 PM. Depending on the day's program, you may be spending time on forest patrols, on the trails, collecting seeds, working in the forest nursery, planting and monitoring trees, or collecting data for our Geographical Information System.

Usual working days are Monday - Friday from 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM including the following tasks.
  • Forest patrols
  • Work on the trails
  • Collecting seeds
  • Working in the tree nursery
  • Planting
  • Monitoring
  • Collecting data

Details on Arrival

You can come during all the year, we will always need your help with the tree nursery and with our other projects.

Free-time activities

In Iracambi, you´ll find several natural swimming places along our streams and small waterfalls. Still, if you prefer big waterfalls, no worries. In Rosário da Limeira, closest municipality, there are two waterfalls good for swimming, and one more in Belizário (the district where Iracambi is located).
If you enjoy hiking, we´re sure you´ll love Iracambi, as there are a lot of trails around. Iracambi has its own trail system, which we use for fauna monitoring, group activities, leisure time or even just to get to places. We are located in a rural community right next to Serra do Brigadeiro State Park, so there are trails crossing the State Park leading to other muncipalities and trails in the State Park that take you to the top of mountains where you have amazing views of our region!
Having a lot of nature and big rocks around, of course there are local climbing groups in case you´re one of those rock lizards :)
We don´t have a zoo in Iracambi, but that´s just because we don´t need one. We have lots of wild animal living all around, even big ones like the puma.
Needless to say nature, streams and waterfalls are the best places for those who practice yoga and/or meditation.
