Our goal is to to train the next generation of PADI professionals to the highest of standards while focusing on the conservation of turtles and our marine environment.

Our 10 week Divemaster Course aims to develop leadership and teaching skills and further your diving knowledge through mentor guidance, work experience, independent self-studying and practical applications. We run our Divemaster as a 10-week internship as we believe to make the most of the experience you should be spending as much time as possible getting hands-on learning and real-life experiences.

BATU BATU is a rustic private island resort set amongst coconut groves, rocky outcrops and fine sand beaches on the tropical, uninhabited island of Pulau Tengah, Malaysia in the South China Sea. The simple resort is built from a variety of hard woods in the style of a Malay “kampung” or village. BATU BATU is committed to the preservation, proliferation and protection of the flora and fauna in and around Tengah Island. We aim to tread lightly, source sustainably, behave responsibly and support local business wherever possible.

Equipment Requirements

We recommend that once certified all PADI professionals should have a full set of dive equipment, however as a certified Divemaster it is
mandatory to have the following minimum equipment;
Dive Computer, 2 surface signaling devices (one audible, one visible) and mask, fins and snorkel. 

Typical day

As a Divemaster trainee you will spend your time working alongside our instructors guiding certified divers, conducting PADI courses/programs, studying dive theory and many other duties associated with being a Divemaster. You will also have the opportunity to get involved in our conservation efforts including our turtle hatchery and reef monitoring projects!

You will receive 4 days off a month which you are able to accumulate and take off in a row if you wish.

Our Dive season is between February to November so from the late November to early February we will not be accepting any applicants.

Free-time activities

During your free time you are able to enjoy the island and the beaches as you please, you are also able to go to the mainland to do some grocery shopping or get some time off the island. Our interns are also free to use kayaks, SUPs, and all other activity related equipment during time off, including tanks and all dive equipment.

Program Requirements

In order to join the program you need to be at least 18 years old on the program start date. There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s) or if your are accompanied by your parents.

Tengah Island Conservation (your host organization) provides consulting and is keen to answer all your questions. Once you reserved your spot, you will receive the contact details of your volunteer project.

On-site services

Services by Tengah Island Conservation

100% of the Divemaster intern fees go towards running the course and conservation programs. 

Food, accommodation, wifi and all Divemaster training materials are included. 

Accommodation

Our intern accommodation - nicknamed 'The Ranch' - is located on Long Beach next to the turtle hatchery and Dive Centre. It includes 2 bathrooms, a basic kitchen and living area and 8 bedrooms. The rooms are twin share with 1 other person, our interns are free to use all the kitchen utensils available.


Bedroom (Single)
Food & Beverages

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served daily at our staff canteen. The dishes served are typically Malaysian / Asian, and can be a bit spicy sometimes. Vegetarian meals can be provided, however with a more limited array of ingredients available. Special food restrictions or allergies should be informed prior to your arrival to the Dive team.

There is no set menu, but on weekly basis we can collect some food items allowing you to make your own exciting dishes in the Ranch!

What's NOT included?
Visa, flights, travel insurance or vaccinations are NOT included in the program fees. An airport pickup isn't included within the program fees either.
Flight Tickets
The nearest airport is Changi International Airport (SIN) in Singapore. We assist you to find cheap flights to Malaysia.
Travel Insurance
Going abroad is an adventure and it is always best to be prepared. Sudden illness or injury, cancellation or theft - a travel insurance for Malaysia provides security and is a plus to have.
Vaccines
If you are intending to volunteer in Malaysia you should seek medical advice before starting your social journey. Check your required vaccinations for Malaysia.

You can volunteer at the project site in Mersing/Malaysia between 9 weeks and 11 weeks. Please note that the above shown program fees are estimated and subject to exchange rate fluctuations. Tengah Island Conservation will let you know about the final price during your application process.
Crowdfunding Service
Generally, volunteering abroad involves certain costs. In case you need financial support, we will assist you to fundraise your volunteer program in Malaysia.
Deposit (15%)
The deposit is simply to reserve your volunteer placement. Payments are handled by PayPal, our trusted global payment provider. If you don't have a PayPal account, you can also pay using a credit card.
Final Payment (85%)
Your final payment will be agreed with Tengah Island Conservation during the application process. Common solutions are either via bank transfer or a cash payment at the project site.
