The veterinary volunteer intern program is designed to provide a good learning experience for anyone who has an interest in animals.

The veterinary volunteer intern program is designed to provide a good learning experience for anyone who has an interest in animals and has a career goal in the veterinary profession. If you have a passion for working with animals, either in the field of veterinary medicine or in a more general animal care-oriented role, then this program is a perfect way for you to gain some knowledge and put your skills into practice.

This position has varying levels of animal contact, and can be informative for those considering a career in the field of veterinary medicine. Ghana has many veterinary problems peculiar to itself.

You would be involved in the day-to-day duties of the veterinarian center with the regular staff in animal health care issues and assisting with immunizations for parasite management, nutrition supplements, administration of medication, vaccinations to animals, assisting with animal examination, diagnostics, treatments of animal patient for and recovery from surgery.

Our veterinary program is available for college, under graduate and recent graduate students taking a gap year or career break or for those professional anxious in sharing their professional knowledge, experience, and expertise. Inexperienced vet volunteer interns will participate in surgical pack sterilization while experienced vets will perform surgery, under the supervision and assistance of licensed host country veterinarians.

Facilities and services available include:
• Pet Vaccination Clinic

• Orthopedic and general surgeries
• Digital X rays
• ECG
• Ultra sound scanning
• Ultra sonic dental cleaning
• Nebulizing

The patients at the hospital include dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, cows and calves, goats, and many more species.

During your internship, you'll work with domestic pets and farm animals – a great opportunity to closely observe and learn from the local veterinarians. You may also get the opportunity to assist with minor procedures and you also generally assist the staff on their daily routines.

If opportunities arise while you're there, you may get a chance to travel with the vets out to farms to treat any animals in need. These could include cattle, goats, chickens, pigs, and domestic pets as well. You'll assist the vets in animal handling, disease identification, pregnancy diagnosis and routine vaccinations.

Typical day

The hospital is open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. and those are the hours that you'll generally work, although these can change at short notice, depending on what's needed. The hospital sometimes stays open until late in the evening if there are lots of surgical operations to be done. Again, you may be asked to work during this period, but this will all add to the benefit you'll derive from the work experience.

On a day-to-day basis, mornings will be spent in the Clinic and afternoons could be either in the clinic, the Laboratory or conducting home visits.

Your weekends are free time to explore your surroundings or to generaly just relax. However, you may be asked to work once in a while over a weekend if a pressing need should arise.

Surgeries happen at night time and you may get a chance to participate in this should you be available.
