Village School Teacher

Assist teachers during classes, preparing learning materials and prepare school activities.

The project

Volunteers will be based in villages across the amazing pacific coast of Costa Rica. The schools are very small with usually around 15 students but some can be larger with up to 150. Most of the schools you will work in only have 1-3 teachers with children aged 6-12 years of age. The main subjects taugh are maths, spanish, science and social studies, while some teach english as it is becoming more important within Costa Rica.

Some schools offer you to assist the teacher in class, usually volunteer taught classes are outside of the mandatory school hours for children so sizes of the classes may vary and it require your creativity.

English is becoming more and more important in Costa Rica so there is large interest in teaching it to children but not only this but other subjects such as sports and arts or music, dance and theater which are very popular with children.

Your work tasks

Volunteering in one of the schools in Costa Rica comes with large amounts of responsibility, because you will act as a role model to students so work must be taken very seriously.

There will be a volunteer coordinator who will help guide you through the activites accoring to interests of the children showing what has worked well before. Even though there is someone to help you should be able to plan and coordinate on your own with lots of energy and creativity. Staying in close contact with teachers and parents is highly recommended to gain more knowledge from your trip.

While you are working in one of the schools this might be our tasks:

  • 2-4 hours per day of childcare, usually in the afternoon but some mornings
  • Prepare and carry out English workshops
  • Organize sports and arts activities
  • Support teachers during classes (not at all schools)
  • Administrative tasks at school
