Village Schools Teacher

In the village schools of "The Reynosa" and "The Horcon" in Túcume, you can teach children aged 7 to 14 years.

In the village school of ‘Las Reynosa’ in Túcume, children between the ages of 7 and 14 are taught in two classes. Our second village school ‘El Horcón’ and the kindergarten of the same name take care of and teach children up to the age of 15. You have the possibility of joining both of these institutes. You have the opportunity to design the teaching structure in a way that best plays to your strengths and ideas about teaching. Language lessons, drawing or singing – there are many options. Throughout the program, you will always work closely with the teaching staff.

A placement at one of our schools is possible from March to December. January and February are holidays in Peru and a placement during these months may be possible, but only after prior consultation. Special qualifications are not necessary, though Spanish language abilities are however important for communication. We will be happy to arrange a language course for you.

Our local supervisor Oscar will be there to assist you. He will pick you up from the airport or bus terminal in Chiclayo and accompany you to your host family and school. Oscar will be your constant point of contact and will help ease your integration into Peruvian life. He will be there to answer all the questions you may have about your stay and the local situation.

Typical day

First of all, it should be said that "the" typical day does not exist. Because, unlike Europe, much happens spontaneously in this school and it always runs differently than planned.

But to put it roughly:

At about 07.30 clock you meet at the Plaza de Armas with the teacher Carmen and the Mototaxista. Together we will go to Puente el Pavo. This is a pick-up point for coaches, buses and mototaxis. Here one collects the other Profesora and goes to the school. The journey takes about 25 minutes.

As soon as you arrive you are greeted by the children. The children sweep the school every day before the beginning of the school and "prepare" for the lessons. They put the water out, arrange the tables, empty the trash cans, and so on. Most of the time the children eat something and then it can start at 08.30 clock!

Normally the volunteer teaches English. But that does not have to be everything. For example, you can also teach German, dance, sports, or art. Feel free to choose your subjects! However, the children need English lessons. The local teachers are really grateful for any help.  You must be aware that both teachers do not speak English and that you are on your own with the preparation of the lesson and the mediation! From time to time it can be that one is left alone for several hours. That means it is always good and definitely an advantage if you are spontaneous, independent and creative! After the English lessons the teacher continues to teach. But for the volunteer (s) there are plenty of other things to do . Usually the children have a half-hour break at 11.00 am and at 1 pm it goes home. From time to time, we keep teachers a bit longer, for example, for meetings with their parents.

There are two aulas. In the first hall are the grades 1 to 3 and in the second hall the grades 4 to 6. It is very spontaneous when one makes English and how often one comes in the week.

A volunteers day:

  • Visit  school every day.
  • Give one to one and a half hours of English per day (usually from 08.30 - 10.00).
  • Alternating in one day Aula 1 and the other day Aula 2.
  • Supported the teachers for the rest of the day. For example supervising the children, correcting, making posters, decorating the classroom, writing news for the parents, cleaning etc.
  • Play soccer with the children or other games during the breaks.

Free-time activities

Free time activities in Túcume
  • The Museum (Túcume): The museum in Túcume is well-known all over the world and definitely worth seeing. It is located just outside Túcumes, but with a walking distance of about 20 minutes or a short drive in the Mototaxi it is easy to reach.
  • The pyramids (Túcume): The pyramids are the symbol of Túcume. They are located near the museum and some of them can even be climbed. This is definitely worth it!
  • Plaza de Armas (Túcume): In every Peruvian village, there is the "Plaza de Armas". This is a bigger place, where there is always something going on! There are parks, stands, the daily market, small shops from and to small events and usually also directly next to the town hall and the church. Also in the evening you can stay there and eat with an ice cream or meet with friends.
  • Concerts and other events (Túcume): In Túcume there are regularly concerts or dance events in the so-called "complejo" or in the small stadium. Frequently known Peruvian bands (for example, corazón serrano) are invited to dance to the mornings. There is usually plenty going on and you will meet many familiar people from the village.

Free time activities in the area
  • Las Pirkas (Jayanca): The Pirkas are a great fun pool in Jayanca. A taxi can be reached in about 20 minutes. The outdoor pool contains two large pools and several water slides as well as a mini zoo and bungalows if you want to stay there several days. Especially in the summer there are many additional activities such as for example parties or small rides with horses.
  • Chiclayo (Chiclayo): This city must be visited! The buses depart from Túcume about 45 minutes to Chiclayo. In CIX (as the city is also called) you can find everything! Shopping centers with shops as well as churches, parks, traditional markets, countless restaurants and cafes, cinemas and lots more.
  • Pimentel (Chiclayo): Just outside Chiclayos you can find the beach Pimentel. A beautiful sandy beach paired with small cafes and one of Peru's longest walks makes this place very special! At the same time you can experience the traditional fishing of the region at specific times.
  • Agua Park (Chiclayo): The Agua Park is an incredibly large water park also just outside CIX. It is comparable to the Pirkas, but it is about three times as big! There are numerous pools, slides, a football field, and a volleyball field. There is also a restaurant and many small food stalls.
  • Real Plaza (Chiclayo): Entering the Real Plaza shopping center is no longer in Peru but in another world. Real Plaza is the largest and newest shopping center in the Lambayeque region and includes numerous world-famous brands and chic restaurants. If you are in a hurry to get back home in Peru, it is worth taking a trip there, because you can get here like in Berlin, Amsterdam or Paris. You can go shopping in the evening hours and end the evening in one of the restaurants.
