Wildlife Sanctuary Worker

Prepare food for the animals, cleaning cages, general maintenance of the house and grounds

The project
This volunteer project is based at a wild life center located between Ascensión de Guarayos and Trinidad, near the village of Santa María. Some of the surrounding areas of these center have suffered from serious deforestation to the unsustainable slash-and-burn agricultural techniques practiced by local farmers. A serious fire risk on the surrounding areas of the project, force many free wild animals to seek refuge in the project area. Thanks to the early efforts of volunteers in 1996, Bolivian and foreign alike, the center has grown to include more than 800 hectares of land and is now home to dozens of animals.

The center has a number of threatened species within the park which includes tapirs, tortoises and birds. The center also specializes in caring for howler monkeys, a variety of bird species and wild felines, including ocelots, pumas and jaguars. The majority of the felines are kept in large enclosures. Following strict safety regulations some can walk the grounds throughout the day by themselves.
