Musha Care Foundation

Women Education Assistant

Mutare, Zimbabwe

We need your support in Zimbabwe to empower less privileged women. On the project you do not need experience or training.

The project

The  aim of this program is to empower the less privileged women with income-generating projects, education and skills training.

At many of the centers, women are able to learn sewing, tailoring, candle-making and jewelry-making through subsidized courses.

The women also need to have access to finance and small business management courses, enabling them to start their own craft-making or tailoring businesses to generate an income and provide for their families.

Not all of the women suffer from HIV/AIDS and some have joined the centers to help improve their overall living situation and learn vital skills to help become self sufficient.

Volunteer work

As a volunteer you will work closely with centers which support women affected by HIV/AIDS in providing counseling, guidance, and sometimes childcare in Sakubva Township in Mutare.

If you have skills in arts and craft-making and an interest in supporting women to become self-sufficient, this project will be a good fit for you.

As a volunteer, you will assist in a range of areas, including counseling, skill-training and campaign/education development.

While volunteering with us , you may also have the opportunity to help on outreach work within the wider local communities and slum areas Sakubva Townships.

Orientation

Orientation is hosted by our local team in Harare or Mutare.

Orientation begins on your chosen start date and covers everything you need to know for your volunteer program in Zimbabwe – Introduction to Zimbabwe,  Customs, Language Training Details, Rules and Expectations, Safety, Travel Opportunities in the country, Introduction to your project and placement.

The orientation will also give you a chance to meet other volunteers and swap contact details for weekend travel and socializing. Once your orientation is complete, you will be transported to your homestay and introduced to your host family.

Typical day

First Day: On your first day of volunteering, you will be escorted to your placement by a local coordinator and introduced to the placement staff you will be working with.

Weekdays: A typical volunteer day would be as follows:

7.30 AM Breakfast with the host family.

8.30 AM - 2.00 PM Volunteers travel to their placements and meet with the placement staff. Work and hours at the placement are dependent on the project and placement that each volunteer is working at. There is usually a morning tea break and lunch break.

2.00 PM - 5.00 PM Work at the placement usually ends. Volunteers are free to travel back to their homestays, go sight seeing, or do some shopping.

7.00 PM - 8.00 PM Dinner with the host family.

Please note, this schedule  vary depending on the particular project the volunteer is participating on.

Details on Arrival

Volunteer programs begin on the 1st and 15th of every month. Volunteers can choose to volunteer for periods ranging from 4 weeks to 11 weeks.

When you arrive, you will be greeted at the airport by a member of the local team and transported to the volunteer accommodation

If you are traveling in Zimbabwe prior to your volunteer program, we can arrange for you to be picked up in Harare  the day before your program orientation

Free-time activities

During the weekends, volunteers have free time to relax or take the opportunity to explore, wider Zimbabwe tourist areas.

Long weekends can be taken to travel further afield (i.e.Chinhoyi Caves, Imre Safari or lnyati Eco Game Reserve), or to embark on a safari. Saturday or Sunday is a religious day of rest. If you wish, you can accompany your host family to their local church, as a Zimbabwe church service is a unique and special experience for many volunteers.

Accommodation
Volunteers are accommodated in homestays or  local host families, who have been approved by our local team in Zimbabwe.

Volunteers can expect to share a bedroom with two to four other volunteers, comprised of single beds and bunk beds with bedding provided.

Living is comfortable and most home-stays have electricity, running water and western bathrooms. It is important to note that there are often power outages and water shortages, and volunteers need to be prepared to have the occasional bucket shower or some time without power.

Some rural homes, and all home-stays in Rusape, do not have electricity or running water. In these locations you can expect to find squat/long-drop toilets.

Our local team give your host family a fee for your support, food and board. It is exciting to stay with a host family, providing you with a unique opportunity to learn about the way of life, meet local people, try local food, speak the local language and engage in local customs and traditions.
Guest Family Bedroom (Single)

Breakfast generally consists of (tea), toast, fruit and sometimes porridge. A typical lunch can include vegetables with rice, occasional meat and fruit. Dinner usually includes traditional food, such as sadza (corn meal) and alongside meat and vegetables.
