This project was created due to the desire to combine Tanzanian Fashion with a good cause. Volunteers will do e.g. marketing and product development.
Tanzanian women are not seen as equal to men. In many cases they are not
allowed to inherit and are often affected by poverty when they are old.
Usually, they are not allowed to have a free will and they must submit
to men. But perceptions are changing! Not only through projects like
African Wear Design. Women start to women start to speak out for their
rights, want to earn their own income and don't want to depend on men
This project was founded by Marilyn Hokororo in 2009. At the moment four out of seven employees are female. It is their desire to combine Tanzanian Fashion with a good cause. Today they manufacture shawls, carpets, blankets, necklaces, belts, bracelets, earrings, key chains and other goods to secure a fair income to the women and men and to support the community.
Creativity and motivation are needed here! The project needs help to promte the products they make. That means you will be mainly working in the field of marketing and product development. Additionally if you like, you can teach the women in English, give computer lessons and look after the children of the employees.
This project is open to anyone who is interested, creative, open, passionate and dynamic but people who are undergoing a started or completed training or degree in marketing and product development are especially encouraged to apply .
In the morning you will discuss with your supervisor what the tasks for the days are.
You will work on different marketing and product development projects with you developed together with Marylyn and Justin (mother and son, founder of the project and your supervisors) but of course you are also free to bring in our own ideas. Your job is mainly office work but you will definitely have enough time to learn waving and making jewelleries and other goods, if you are interested as well as chat with your collegues and learn about the struggles women face in Tanzanian society.
