The project

This empowerment project was founded by Marilyn Hokororo in 2009. About half of the employees are female. It is their desire to combine Tanzanian Fashion with a good cause: making a living and being able to financially support their families. Today they manufacture shawls, carpets, blankets, necklaces, belts, bracelets, earrings, key chains, and other goods to secure a fair income for the women and men in their community.

Almost all women in this project are single mothers who are having a very hard time providing for their children. Their husbands left the family, are drug addicted, or simply show no interest in caring for their wives and children. Single mothers in general are facing different challenges here in Tanzania, suffering from patriarchal stereotypes like women being weaker or less intelligent than men, which can make it harder for them to find a job. On average, a woman has five children and providing for them even with a partner is hard enough. To combine these two parts of working to have an income and taking care of their children, African Wear Design steps in and helps these women to believe in themselves and their abilities. Viva Tanzania does not only support this project with volunteers but also offers their amazing products for salel in the shop at the volunteer house.

Your work

Creativity and motivation are needed here! You can choose your field of activities yourself: from marketing to product development; from English and computer lessons or looking after the children of the employees, everything is possible.

Sometimes African Wear Design gets big orders from abroad, so it can be your job to manage that everything is produced within the given time frame to meet the customers needs. African Wear Design might also be present at different fairs, presenting their products and gaining new costumers, and it could be your job to plan such an exhibition.

This project is open to anyone who is interested, creative, open, passionate, and dynamic. If your profession is related to any of the above mentioned fields, your help is preferable.
Working hours will be discussed individually and depend much on how much you want to engage here.

Typical day

Like everywhere there is no typical day and your work mainly depends on your interest and knowledge.
In the morning up on arrival at the project you will discuss your work for the day with your supervisor. Some times you might be told what to do but your project welcomes any idea or suggestion you have. Your job is mainly office work but you will definitely have enough time to learn waving, making jewelleries and other goods, if you are interested as well as chat with your collegues and learn about the struggles women face in Tanzanian society.

Details on Arrival

You can start working at this project any day of the week that suits you.
On your first day we will do a town tour showing you Arusha, how to use the buses, where to find ATMs and exchange money and much more.
