Granada, Nicaragua show on map

Provide essential care and support to vulnerable girls and young women. Encourage the brave females of Africa.

The program

For girls who have suffered abuse and neglect, a safe place to re-group and thrive is essential to their well-being and future happiness. This inspiring program helps marginalized girls in the historic city of Granada, Nicaragua to seek a safe and happy life after significant abuse or hardship. This program strives to help ‘las chicas’ (the girls) to overcome their traumas from physical and emotional abuses by providing a safe and caring environment where they can develop their self-esteem and work towards a brighter future. The program provides much-needed help, love and compassion to girls of various ages up to 18 years who have suffered at the hands of others, giving them the guidance and unwaivering support needed to achieve a happier life. Volunteers on this program provide essential labor and, most importantly, companionship for the girls at a time in their lives where they are vulnerable and in need of a friendly face. Volunteers with empathy and warmth are encouraged to apply for this vital initiative that changes lives for the better.

Goals of this Project:

  • Provide essential care and support to vulnerable girls and young women
  • Improve the future prospects of those who have been abused
  • Give impoverished children and young women quality care, compassion and a sense of hope
  • Enable inter-cultural exchange which benefits both locals and international volunteers alike

How you can help

Volunteers play a central role in helping the young women and girls on this wonderful Women’s Empowerment program. Participants will spend their time supporting the girls and assisting the local staff as needed on this understaffed and underfunded, yet absolutely essential, program. Volunteers will help the girls with psychological support and work to strengthen their self-esteem. Simply spending time with the girls and boosting their confidence levels can make a huge difference to the lives of these girls who have suffered abuse and neglect. Volunteers spend their time caring for the girls and imparting their own learning, education and attention. International volunteers play an important role in helping these vulnerable girls and are truly valued within this healing environment. Psychologists or students in this field are highly sought after at this initiative, however any volunteer who is willing to help those most vulnerable and show them kindness, patience and compassion will be greatly appreciated.

Volunteers will contribute in a number of ways on this program and can expect to undertake the following tasks:

  • Support the young women through companionship and learning
  • Attend to and interact with the children
  • Organize activities and provide skill-based training
  • Assist with the running of the program

Located on the shores of Lake Nicaragua, Granada is home to multiple Spanish colonial landmarks that have survived repeated pirate invasions. The city’s main plaza, Central Park, is dominated by the colorful, neoclassical facade of the Cathedral of Granada, originally dating to 1583. The Centro Cultural Convento San Francisco nearby is famed for its displays of pre-Columbian statues.

Granada's restaurants have received international recognition by newspapers like the New York Times. In the city of Granada, there are many restaurants to visit and in recent years, the cities evolving culinary scene mixes local and international flavors, as well as supporting farm-to-table sustainability of local growers and producers. Granada's economy continues to grow in big part because it is fast becoming a tourist attraction for its colonial architecture, as well as its ecological beauty and now as a food destination. This is a fantastic place to be a Love Volunteer!
