Work in a Day Care Center

Working with children, organizing a number of games and activities, playing with children, helping with general jobs

The project

In Costa Rica low income families are very frequent, which means both parents have to work full time in order to provide for the family. The day care centers where you will work as a volunteer allow parents to work and give a home like atmosphere for there children to spend their days. These centres provide a home like atmosphere for many children in surrounding areas from different backgrounds from poverty to middle class, with charges varying on household income. The childrens ages vary from 6 months old to 12 years of age.

This program keeps kids away from the streets clear of drugs, gangs, alcohol and prostitution, providing the children with care, education, snacks and meals. The centres specialize in certain topics such as nutrition and education.

The day care centres are situated in and around San Jose, the capital. The centres can be reached by bus or walking distance in some cases. They vary on size from very small groups to a group with over 100, these groups are split up into age groups and personal development groups according to their needs.

The children are provided with classes to help with their education while also doing recreational activities and meals. Some specialized centres offer psychology sessions.

Your work

When working with these children you will be seen as a role model for these children to follow which is a big responsibility, so you should be very creative, spontaneous and tolerant on a day to day basis.

Your work may include the following tasks:

  • Organizing games and activities
  • Playing with the children outdoors
  • Do handcrafts, paint, build, create
  • Play group games or with single children
  • Helping out with the operation of the centers
  • Providing a warm and caring attention to the children
  • Help to feed and wash younger children
  • Assist in napping the small children
  • Monitor and supervise the children

On a day to day basis you will be expected to organize and play games with the children, while also being creative by building and creating various objects with the children. You will also be expected to help with the day to day operations this could be painting a new wall or washing and feeding small children.

Working with children means volunteers are encouraged to be very creative within their roles and bring any of there own skills to work with the children as well as new ideas which can help create a fun enviroment.

In some centers, especially for pre-school children, tasks can include teaching arts and crafts as well as other classes such as English. While you may also be asked to prepare materials for lessons.
