Work in a National Park in Chile

Environment Conservation Work

Help preserve and maintain the most famous national park in Chile! Assist at the visitor's center, work in reforestation and environmental education

The Project

Torres del Paine National Park is not only Chile’s crown jewel, but also among the most marvelous natural reserves in the world. The national park is located on the north end of the Magallanes region, and is surrounded by majestic mountains and stunning Patagonian nature.

This national park has four types of vegetation – pre-Andean scrubland on the banks of rivers and lakes, the Magallanes forest that is made up of the Nothofagus species, and the Magallanes tundra. The area is full of bent-over bushes, plants, and prairies. It also features distinct vegetation at great heights above the forests, which gradually disappear as the altitude increases. The variety of Patagonian nature provides a great habitat for different species of animals, such as birds, flamingos, pumas, and guanacos. This volunteer project fights for the preservation of natural and cultural resources in the Patagonian region.

Your Tasks

As a volunteer, you will be part of a fun work environment and a multicultural team. The managers of the project are looking for people that love to work outside, can work well on a team, and who have the desire to work hard to protect local nature. Approximately 155,000 people from all over the world visit this national park every year, and it is of upmost importance that volunteers are passionate about protecting this unique spot on Earth.

As a volunteer, your tasks may include: working at the visitor's center (principal tasks), maintaining the park’s trails, raising awareness about environmental protection and its natural resources, assisting with reforestation, helping with the organization of marketing and sales events, and assisting with scientific studies.

If you are someone who can work well with people from diverse cultures, loves to work outside, and has a desire to work hard to protect the natural environment, then this volunteer program is perfect for you.

Climate

Due to frigid Antarctica in the south, the Pacific Ocean in the west, and the Campo de Hielo Sur in the north, the weather in this region changes quickly, and is often very windy. The average temperature during the summer is between 12° C (54° F), and 23° C (73° F).

What to Bring

  • Comfortable work clothes (warm and waterproof)
  • Sturdy shoes (possibly trekking shoes)
  • Work gloves and torch
  • Warm sleeping clothes
  • Sun hat, sunglasses, and sun protection (at least SPF 15)
  • Towels
  • Small backpack for hiking
  • Sleeping bag and camping gear
  • Plate, cup, and eating utensils

Typical day

Volunteers will carry out many tasks to ensure the preservation of Torres del Paine National Park. Some of the different tasks may include:

Maintenance of Trails

Maintaining the trails that go through the national park is one of the most important duties of volunteers. Tourists have to be led safely to all areas of the reservation while avoiding any negative impacts on the natural environment. As a volunteer, you will be provided with the tools needed to repair and maintain the signs, clean up the trails, and make sure they are safe. Please keep in mind that this is physically demanding work, and you will be working outside for most of the day.

Environmental Education

Raising awareness about the environment and the natural resources of Torres del Paine is a main goal of this project. Volunteers are always welcome to offer their own ideas that could benefit these efforts. During the project, you will help organize seminars, assist tourists at the visitor's center, prepare informational materials, take part in the park’s own programs, and most importantly, always be available for any questions that tourists might have.

Marketing and Sales

The organization is very focused on improving sustainably. One of its biggest aims is to be able to support itself financially. Innovative ideas and proactive initiative from volunteers are always welcome. These ideas could include ways to collect more donations or organizing sales of natural products that are produced in the park.

Campaigns and Scientific Studies (is not always available)

The organization that supports this project cooperates with different institutions and contributes to various projects related to the protection of the environment. Volunteers are always asked to help out wherever it is needed, and you may even have the opportunity to work with scientists as they carry out environmental studies.
