Taking care of the children and adolescents, organizing recreational activities
By volunteering on this project you will be given an insight on the situation of poor families in Peru that live on the margins of society and are fighting to survive each day. A large amount of sympathy is required to socially rehabilitate the young people, to gain their confidence and to integrate them into the society.
There are specialized personnel who are in charge of caring and educating the children aged 5 to 18 years old, the main objective of these institutions is to help the children with the processing of their - often traumatic - experiences in their families and to give them a better perspective for the future through good education.
Volunteers are always welcome at these centers since they are so under funded, during your time here you will form relations with children and colleagues making lots of friends.
On a typical working day your tasks will include helping the workers care for the children, helping with activities that stimulate intellectual and social development, organizing and participating in games, helping with homework, teach subjects such as English and art.
People who wish to volunteer on this project do not need any special skills or experience, but they need patience and a positive attitude. It is also very important that you can work independently and show initiative because these centers are very under staffed and you will be working without a lot of supervision.
Always keep in mind that you have a role model function for the often traumatized children.
In your spare time there are a wide range of activities to choose from such as playing sports with local community like football. Most volunteers choose to spend their free time exploring the city and taking in its rich culture, there are bars close which you can go socialize in.
For this project you get the chance to live with a Peruvian family in a single or double room with shared bathrooms and living areas, this gives you the chance to learn the culture and pick up on Spanish
There is another option to live in a guest house with other volunteers (prices vary)
Yes, if you stay with a guest family full board is provided (3 meals per day).
