The Project
As a volunteer for this project, you will gain a direct insight into the lives of impoverished families that are fighting to survive each day. You will work at a center that aims to rehabilitate children socially, helping them to gain the confidence and skills they need to have a brighter future.
At the centers, specialized personnel are in charge of caring for and educating the children between the ages of 5-18. The main objective of the institutions is to provide emotional healing to children who have had traumatic experiences in their families and give them hope for the future through good education.
Due to the fact that the centers are severely underfunded, volunteers are always welcome and greatly appreciated. During your time here, you will build relationships with the children and become friends with other volunteers.
Your Tasks
On a typical work day, your tasks will include helping the workers care for the children, assisting with activities that stimulate intellectual and social development, organizing and participating in games, helping with homework, and teaching subjects such as English and art.
No previous experience or special skills are required to participate in this project, however, volunteers need to have patience and a positive attitude. It is also very important that you can work independently and show initiative because these centers are very understaffed, and you will be working without a lot of supervision.
Always keep in mind that you are a role model for the children, most of which have had traumatizing pasts.
In your spare time, there is a wide range of activities to choose from, such as playing soccer and other sports in the local community. Most volunteers choose to spend their free time exploring the city and taking in its rich culture. There also are bars nearby where you can go to socialize.
Note: Prices refer to the accommodation in a homestay with full-board. Accommodation in the volunteer house (no meals included) is also available upon request.
An airport pick-up in Lima can be arranged for an extra cost. Please contact us for price information!
During your project, you will
have the chance to live with a Peruvian family in a single room with
shared bathrooms and living areas. This gives you the perfect opportunity to learn
about the culture and improve your Spanish. The homestay includes 3 meals per day.
Volunteers can also be accommodated in the shared dormitories at the Volunteer House (guest house). No meals included.
Full-board with 3 typical Peruvian meals per day are included when living in a homestay. No meals are included when living in the volunteer house.
