Working With Disabled Children

St Ursula Special School is a Rehabilitation and Day care centre for children with learning and multiple disabilities. We care for rejected children.

A volunteer works with the children at the centre providing care, controlling them in class, feeding, teaching crafts, drawing pictures,painting and also providing counseling services to children and their families. Providing vocational skills training to the children in different types of trade which the volunteer knows. Instruct children in different sports and games skills, play with the children as we socialize them,go we them on tours and also make home visits under the community Based Rehabilitation program as we assess homes and environments in which our children come from. We train parents, family members and neighbors on challenges of disability among children and how to prevent them before birth, early detection among and treatment adherence. Provide therapy and hygiene training to children.

Program Requirements

In order to join the program you need to be at least 18 years old on the program start date. There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s).

Your helping hand will be required on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 09:00 - 13:00

Free-time activities

Weekends are free for the volunteers to go for recreation activities or tourism. They will have the freedom of visiting cultural sites, Source of the Nile, Kayaking, white water rafting,swimming,Dancing, Gorilla tracking, bird viewing, visit Rain forest like Mabira, waterfalls,horse riding, bangy jumping, etc. Jinja is in the centre of Eastern and central Uganda and is a tourist hub. It provides the experience that will make your volunteer time memorable. You will interact with the most friendly and outgoing people in the world. The volunteer will have the opportunity to visit Basoga cultural sites in the " Obakyabazinga Bwa Busoga" which is the traditional kingdom with all its rich cultural activities throughout the year.

Visa, flights, travel insurance or vaccinations are NOT included in the program fees.

No worries, Volunteer World supports you in raising funds, checking your visa regulations and travel insurance. We also assist you in finding the cheapest flights for your journey.
Airport Pickup

Volunteers are picked from Entebbe International Airport on arrival in Uganda by the BUWEDDA staff and driven direct to Jinja. And then taken to the project site for orientation before they can start work. We request our volunteers to provide us with their travel details before departure from their country. Send us the Airline you are using, arrival date and time to enable us plan to receive you at the airport. Costs are already covered in program fees.


Accommodation is in secure environment approved by BUWEDDA Board. Volunteers are placed in Host families and they become part of them to provide services needed. If they want to stay in a hostel or guest house, arrangements can be be done in advance before your arrival so communication has to be made in time.

Break fast, evening tea and dinner are provided as part of the program fee by the host family. Vegetarian foods are available, all african dishes and some western foods are also provided occasionally.

You can volunteer at the project site in Jinja/Uganda between 4 weeks and 24 weeks. Please note that the above shown program fees are estimated and subject to exchange rate fluctuations. BUWEDDA will tell you your final price during your application process.
Average Fees
Deposit (15%)
The deposit is simply to reserve your volunteer placement. Payments are handled by PayPal, our trusted global payment provider. If you don't have a PayPal account, you can also pay using a credit card.
Final Payment (85%)
Your final payment will be agreed with BUWEDDA during the application process. Common solutions are either via bank transfer or a cash payment at the project site.
