Provide teaching support to children in Granada

The program

For volunteers who love working with children and wish to make a positive impact on those less fortunate, this program will provide a truly memorable experience. A solid education is the key to a brighter future for those marginalized and living in a developing nation without additional support. This program aims to build a strong platform for children to thrive and prosper, providing an education-based after school program to support at risk children and encourage their love for learning. Based in the beautiful Nicaraguan city of Granada, volunteers will provide essential support to children in a variety of subjects, including English. By providing support and encouragement, students have a much improved chance of learning and staying in the education system for longer. Sometimes all it takes is one mentor to show an avid interest in a student for them to thrive – be that mentor and help to improves lives!

Goals of this Project:

  • Provide teaching support to children in Granada
  • Improve the future prospects of some of Nicaragua’s most impoverished children, and help them to break the poverty cycle
  • Enable inter-cultural exchange which benefits both students and international volunteers alike.
  • Keep children in education for longer by supporting their needs

How you can help

Volunteers on this important program will find they are truly helping impoverished children by providing a volunteer labor force that enables this essential support program to exist. Participants play an integral role in achieving the goals of this project as without a free volunteer labor force, this program would be simply unsustainable. Volunteers will assist teachers with running the program, help with lesson plans and offer one on one teaching sessions. Those with prior teaching experience can help strengthen core subject lessons and provide additional support. English is a key area where volunteers may be able to teach students, along with supporting in other areas and subjects. For volunteers who love to teach, are versatile and show initiative, this program promises to be a valuable experience for all involved. While participants with knowledge of elementary class subjects will find this an advantage and will be extremely beneficial to the program, all volunteers with a love of teaching and spending quality time with children will make a huge difference to these children’s lives.

Volunteers contribute in a number of ways on the program and can expect to undertake the following tasks:

  • Teaching English or other subjects if appropriate
  • Teach topics to empower students such as income generating skills
  • Assist teachers plan lessons
  • Help children do their homework
  • Teach children other hobbies or skills and take an interest in their lives

Located on the shores of Lake Nicaragua, Granada is home to multiple Spanish colonial landmarks that have survived repeated pirate invasions. The city’s main plaza, Central Park, is dominated by the colorful, neoclassical facade of the Cathedral of Granada, originally dating to 1583. The Centro Cultural Convento San Francisco nearby is famed for its displays of pre-Columbian statues.

Granada's restaurants have received international recognition by newspapers like the New York Times. In the city of Granada, there are many restaurants to visit and in recent years, the cities evolving culinary scene mixes local and international flavors, as well as supporting farm-to-table sustainability of local growers and producers. Granada's economy continues to grow in big part because it is fast becoming a tourist attraction for its colonial architecture, as well as its ecological beauty and now as a food destination. This is a fantastic place to be a Love Volunteer!
