Youth Empowerment Worker

Education Youth Teaching

This program works with young people who are marginalised - through social deprivation, their special needs or failure to thrive within the traditional education system.

About the program

The C.A.R.E. (The Centre for Adolescent Renewal and Education) project was established in April 1993 to help disadvantaged Saint Lucian young people to take control of their lives through a programme geared towards the promotion of self-empowerment by providing life skills, vocational and basic education in a nurturing and safe environment.

These young people find themselves ill equipped for life and are unable to find employment. Some have failed to reach the required academic standards and left school with no formal qualifications. Others get hooked on drugs and/or turn to violence.  Failure is very much part of their lives and, as a result of this lack of self-confidence, many radiate hostility and lack trust – they feel that no-one listened to them.

C.A.R.E. works with young people between the ages of 12 and 20.  There are several centres throughout the beautiful and lush island if Saint Lucia.

The objective of the programme is to foster positive attitudes in young people towards themselves, others and work – empowering them towards leading a more independent life. The programme also aims to train young people to manage their own sexuality and emotions.

Who we are looking for

A large variety of abilities and skills will be welcomed by the director and staff of these local education initiatives.  The following skills are needed to support the dedicated staff in their work supporting, training and preparing school drop-outs for a worthwhile future:

  • youth workers
  • practical skills - electronics, carpentry, mechanics, catering, garments & fashion
  • life skills
  • small-business skills
  • teaching - remedial English and Maths, particularly practical
  • special needs educators, especially those experienced in autistic spectrum disorders including Aspergers Syndrome and/or those with specific learning difficulties
  • drama teachers and coaches
  • IT and web skills
  • organisational, accounting, marketing and human resource practitioners to help build the capacity of the project staff
  • organic production, pest control, husbandry and agronomics

Why this is important

Saint Lucia is sold as a Sun, Sea and Sand paradise destination enjoyed by many.  However the reality is that a significant proportion of the population does not benefit from the tourist dollar. This contributes to marginalization of many Saint Lucians, particularly the youth, who without access to education and employment opportunities are vulnerable to a life of crime and failure.

C.A.R.E. is recognised by the government as one of the few organisations to bring hope and provide role models to disadvantaged young people.

Your Role as a Volunteer

Volunteers will be placed at one of the C.A.R.E. centres to support the staff there, or at the main C.A.R.E. office according to their individual placement outlines. They will have an individual placement outline written specifically them to best utilise their skills and experience in supporting project staff.

They will be placed with one or a small group of local staff with whom they will share their skills during their placement; this will involve working alongside them so for most volunteers will also involve some work with the young trainees attending the centres.  olunteers are not expected to bring any special equipment with them.  Although the C.A.R.E. centres do not have a lot of resources, volunteers are encouraged to utilise materials available locally.

The centres are situated at various places around the island of Saint Lucia. However it is likely that volunteers will work in one of the centres close to Castries, easily accessible by bus from their accommodation in the tourist area of the island. During the orientation process they will receive detailed guidance as to how to accomplish the daily commute to work.

Free-time activities

Saint Lucia is a Sun, Sea and Sand tourist destination, and volunteers will be able to take advantage of all activities and trips available to tourists during their free time.

Their accommodation is close to the beach, and most volunteers enjoy a leisurely swim in the sea and a drink in the beach bars at the end of the working day.

The island has many beauty spots which volunteers can visit, including the world's only drive-in volcano!  Volunteers can arrange to join tourist trips to beauty spots (our local partners can help you arrange this), hire a car, travel by local bus or even travel by boat around the island.

It is also possible to take weekend trips to nearby islands such as Martinique.
