About the program

Why Corals?

Coral reefs are critical to the continued success of our planet - yet they're being destroyed at an alarming rate.

Coral reefs play an essential role in creating healthy ecosystems - above and below water. When they bleach and die (due to rising ocean temperatures, human destruction, pollution, etc) they put into motion a devastating ripple effect.

Without reefs, fish and other marine creatures are left without a place to live, breed, and hide - causing coastal communities to struggle with their way of providing in their local communities. The balance between environmental and economical way of life is critical for humanity to sustain a healthy future.

That's where our Revive Reef Restoration Program comes in.

Revive Reef Restoration Program:

Unlock the secrets of coral restoration and become an advocate for marine conservation. This comprehensive citizen science program - based in beautiful Bocas del Toro, Panama - is designed for individuals passionate about protecting our oceans and eager to make a tangible impact on coral reef ecosystems.

Volunteers will delve into the science, techniques, and community engagement aspects of coral restoration, gaining the base knowledge and skills necessary to contribute actively to reef rehabilitation efforts.

During your stay, you will have educational lessons that review topics such as: coral ecology, coral threats, and restoration techniques. In addition you will participate in community engagement, fieldwork and practical applications of what you learned in the classroom. Once each daily lesson is complete, you embark on diving sessions to develop these skills and start contributing to the restoration project first-hand!

What You Will Learn:

1. Introduction to Coral Ecology:

- Explore the fundamental biology and ecology of coral reefs.

- Understand the importance of coral reefs in marine ecosystems.

2. Coral Threats and Challenges:

- Examine the various threats facing coral reefs, including climate change, pollution, and overfishing.

- Discuss the impact of these threats on global coral populations.

3. Coral Restoration Techniques:

- Learn hands-on techniques for coral propagation, transplantation, and maintenance.

- Gain proficiency in coral nursery establishment and management.

4. Community Engagement and Partnerships:

- Understand the significance of involving local communities in coral restoration projects.

5. Fieldwork and Practical Application:

- Participate in hands-on fieldwork exercises to apply learned techniques.

- Gain real-world experience in coral restoration projects.

6. Certification Assessment:

- Demonstrate acquired knowledge through a final assessment.

- Receive a recognized certification upon successful completion.

Location:

We are located on the mainland of Isla Colon, Bocas del Toro, Panama. Orientation, group educational lessons and check out dives will be held at Bocas Pirates Dive Center, which is conveniently located in the heart of Bocas Town.

Background on Bocas del Toro:

Bocas was declared Hope Spot in December 2019 by Mission Blue. It is home to countless important marine organisms including sharks, sea turtles, bottlenose dolphins, over 120 species of sponge, three different species of mangroves and a diverse array of Caribbean coral species.

What to Pack:

1. Headlamp

One of the lovely things about living in the jungle is the fact we’re surrounded by

nature. But that does mean that by the time the sun goes down it can be a little bit

tricky to see the path. So we recommend you pop a headlamp in your bag when

you’re packing – rechargeable is best!

2. Eco-friendly toiletries

We like to promote the use of plastic-free natural-based products like shampoo/

conditioner bars and insect repellent.

3. Reef-safe sunscreen

As a conservation center working closely with corals, we do everything we can to

minimize our impact in the ocean. In this spirit, we ask you to bring sunscreen free

from octinoxate and oxybenzone- two chemicals that cause the most damage to

corals.

4. Sunglasses, sunhat, sunshirt (rashguard), buff

Always useful for our surface intervals and travels! Also, Bocas is quite dusty now

with lots of road construction, so you may appreciate having a buff or mask on hand

when walking around town.

5. Dive equipment

Full equipment rental is included in the price. But if you own any of your own

equipment, feel free to bring it along! Please let us know what you’ll need.

6. Cash

Lots of places in Bocas Town accept credit cards, but there are still a few crucial

businesses that don't- namely the boat and land taxis. While you can get cash here,

the ATMs here charge heavy fees for every withdrawal, regardless of the amount, so

it might be sensible to bring it with you. Always try to have small bills for the taxis -

sometimes you may get a driver who says they don’t have change and you’re stuck

paying too much.

7. International/ Panamanian SIM

While many places around Bocas del Toro have free, accessible Wi-Fi (including our

classroom), it’s recommended to have a working SIM card to have easy access to

maps, contacting taxi boats and any other travel needs.

8. Reusable water bottle

To help combat plastic waste (and keep your expenses down), we suggest you bring

a reusable water bottle. If you don’t have one on Day 1 of class you will be asked to

purchase one in town. Download the app called Refill My Bottle to find places

around the island to refill.

9. Waterproof bag and rain jacket

Weather in Bocas can be a little fickle. While we always hope for the best weather

for our students, nothing can be guaranteed - even in the dry season. It’s a good bet

to pack a small, fold away waterproof bag of some sort that you can keep in the

bottom of your backpack or a dry bag.

10. Beach/boat towel

We suggest bringing a microfiber towel - they dry quickly and sand comes off easily.

Meet your organization

Who Are We?

Mother of Corals is a non-profit organization that provides coastal communities with the tools and resources to create and maintain artificial coral reef habitats. By working together to promote environmental and economic growth, we can make a sustainable impact above and below the water.

Our team is a group of ocean-obsessed scientists, conservationists, travelers and friends with a shared mission of preserving our coral reefs.

We are proud members of the Bocas Hope Spot Alliance, and partners with Mission Blue, Ocean First Education and 1% of the Planet Environmental Partner.

What Do We Do?

Our projects focus on training local community members and volunteers to build and maintain artificial reef structures. Over time, corals grow on these structures to form a fully functioning reef - reviving the ecosystem and restoring the natural balance.

Where We Work?

We're currently located in Bocas del toro, Panama and working on a number of projects in this area. We're proud of the conservation work we've done so far, including championing Mission Blue's designation of Bocas del Toro Archipelago Hope Spot.

What's Our Mission?

Our mission is to promote environmental and economic growth on a local level, so we can make a sustainable impact above and below the water.

Who Are We Looking For?

Individuals passionate about marine conversation and eager to make a tangible impact on coral reef ecosystems.
