Support children from infants to teenagers at preschools and special education centres in Ho Chi Minh City, including a long-established pagoda children's home.

    Om programmet

Ho Chi Minh City — Saigon to almost everyone who lives there — is loud, fast and growing quicker than its public services can keep up with. Preschools, special education centres and children's homes across the city are carrying more children than they have trained adults for, particularly where disability is involved.

    Where you could be placed

Preschools, special education centres for children with disabilities and developmental disorders, and residential children's homes.

One long-standing placement is a pagoda children's home built in the 1920s and known across the city. It now cares for more than 200 children from across southern Vietnam. Many were left at the pagoda gate; hospitals sometimes contact the head monk about newborns who have been left behind. Among them are children with congenital conditions, Down syndrome and cerebral palsy. Those who are well enough attend classes at the pagoda or at local schools, so they get an education and the company of other children their age.

Age range across the placements: infants to teenagers.

    What you will actually do

    • Spending time with the children — playing, listening, sitting with them. This is most of the job and it is not filler
    • Teaching basic skills, and simple English to the children and the nannies
    • Running games and preschool activities
    • Helping the nannies with cleaning and daily routines
    • Networking, fundraising and organising collections of books, clothes and shoes if you have those skills

    Being straightforward about this placement

You are here to add attention that a stretched staff cannot give — not to run anything, not to fix anything, and not to substitute for the nannies who do this work every day of the year. The children will still be here after you leave, and the value of your time is measured in whether you were consistent while you were there.

Some of it is emotionally hard. Some of it is mopping floors. Both matter.

    Who it suits

Anyone 18 or over who is fit, healthy, patient and genuinely willing. A clean criminal background check is mandatory. Volunteers of all nationalities, religions and backgrounds are welcome.

Minimum four weeks, because children who have already had a lot of adults pass through deserve better than a short visit.

    • Monday — Orientation with the local coordinator: safety, Vietnamese culture and greetings, getting around, food, and what your placement involves.
    • Tuesday to Friday — Volunteer work at your placement. Evenings free.

    The working pattern

    • Morning — Breakfast at the house, which you make yourself, then out to the project
    • 12:00 — Lunch, cooked at the volunteer house by the resident cook (or at the project where it is provided)
    • Afternoon — Back with the children
    • 19:00 — Dinner at the house, cooked for you
    • Evening — Free. District 1 is six kilometres away and Saigon does not go to bed early

Saturday and Sunday — Free to explore, rest and travel.

🚩 The programme ends on a SATURDAY of your final week, and you leave the accommodation that day.

The schedule varies by placement and can change with local circumstances. Flexibility is part of the job.

History — The War Remnants Museum is difficult and worth doing properly. The Cu Chi Tunnels, an hour or so out of the city, are the other half of the same story. Between them they will tell you more about Vietnam than any guidebook.

French Saigon — Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica, the Central Post Office, and the Opera House, all within a few streets of each other in District 1.

Markets — Ben Thanh for souvenirs and street food; Binh Tay in Cholon, the Chinatown market, for the version locals actually shop at.

Temples — The Jade Emperor Pagoda, dense with incense and detail, is the one to see.

Mekong Delta day trip — The river, the villages and the floating markets. The classic weekend from Saigon.

Green space and water — Tao Dan Park for a quiet morning, or a Saigon River cruise for a view of the city from the outside.

Further afield — Cheap flights north to Da Nang, Hoi An and Hanoi, and buses east to Mui Ne and the coast. Most volunteers keep a few days free at the end of the programme.

Afhentning i lufthavnen i Tan Son Nhat International Airport

Pickup is included on arrival. The return drop is not.

🚩 Arrive on a SUNDAY at Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN) — that is the programme start day. A programme representative meets you and takes you to the volunteer house, 12km away. Full details come in your pre-departure guidebook once you book.

🚩 The programme ENDS on a Saturday, not a Sunday, and you leave the accommodation that day. Check both dates before booking flights — they are different days of the week.

🚩 The return airport drop is not included. Email us or ask your coordinator, or book a Grab or taxi, which is straightforward and cheap in Saigon.

Tan Son Nhat is Vietnam's busiest airport, with direct connections across Asia, the Middle East and Australia, so most volunteers arrive without a domestic transfer.

    Indkvartering

You stay at the volunteer house, 12km from Tan Son Nhat airport and about 6km from District 1 — close enough to be in the middle of Saigon in twenty minutes, far enough to sleep.

Four floors, four bedrooms, three bathrooms, two terraces, a living room and a kitchen. The house takes 12 to 16 volunteers, though rooms are usually only four to a room.

Rooms have air conditioning, fans and private bathrooms — private bathrooms are unusual at this price and worth knowing about.

    Also there:

    • Wi-Fi throughout
    • Washing machine
    • Fridge
    • Storage for your things
    • A house assistant who cooks the two main meals and keeps the common areas clean

The area is quiet and clean, and the house is spacious and cool — which in Saigon's climate matters a great deal more than it sounds.

    Mad og drikkevarer

Two cooked meals a day are included.

Breakfast — Self-made before you leave for the project. Toast, eggs, fruit, coffee and tea.

Lunch, 12:00 — Cooked at the volunteer house, or provided at your project where the placement includes it.

Dinner, 19:00 — Cooked at the house by the resident assistant. Proper Vietnamese food: pork, fish, beef or chicken with tofu or egg, several vegetable dishes, rice and a soup.

Allergies and dietary preferences — Tell the cook directly when you arrive, and put it on your application form as well. It is a small house and the kitchen can accommodate you if it knows.

Beyond that, Saigon is one of the great eating cities. Banh mi, com tam, pho and iced coffee are all within a short walk of the house and cost very little.

    Oplysninger ved ankomst

🚩 Arrival is a SUNDAY, at Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN). Programmes start on the Sunday you select, so book your flight for that day.

🚩 The programme ends on a Saturday and you leave the accommodation that day. Note that these are different days — check both before booking flights.

Arrival pickup is included. A programme representative meets you at the airport and takes you to the volunteer house, which is 12km from the airport. Full details come in your pre-departure guidebook once you book.

🚩 The return airport drop is not included. Email us or ask your coordinator; most volunteers book a Grab or taxi, which is cheap in Saigon.

🚩 Daily transport to the project is not included. Budget for it across a longer placement.

Documents — A clean criminal background check is mandatory before your placement, along with your CV and a passport copy.

Visa — Vietnam's entry rules vary by nationality and change fairly often; some passports get visa-free entry, others need an e-visa arranged in advance. Check your own position early, particularly for stays over 30 days, and ask us if you are not sure. Visa fees are not included.

Insurance — Travel and medical insurance is mandatory, and can be bought through us at extra cost.

What to bring — Light, modest clothes; shoulders and knees covered at the project, and more so at the pagoda placement, which is a religious site. Rainwear for the May-to-November wet season, and good sun protection.

Climate — Saigon is hot and humid all year, unlike Hanoi. There is no cold season, just a dry one (December to April) and a wet one.

When to come — Weekly Sunday starts, year-round. Note that Vietnam largely shuts down for Tet, the Lunar New Year, usually late January or February — ask us before booking dates around it.
