    Om programmet

The daycare centres in Cusco exist so that mothers can work. That is the plain economics of it, and it is why they matter. A quarter of the children have single mothers, and the great majority come from difficult circumstances at home.

Each centre runs with one caregiver. One adult, a room of children between six months and four years old — most of them one and two — and very little else. The beds are small and old, the sheets and blankets are worn, and there are not many pillows, let alone toys. When people ask what difference a volunteer makes, this is the honest answer: it doubles the number of adults in the room.

What the work actually looks like

Mostly it is care. Holding, feeding, changing, settling, playing. Sitting on the floor and giving a one-year-old your full attention for twenty minutes, which is twenty minutes the caregiver can spend on the others.

Beyond that there is room to use your head. The children have no fixed schedule — they come to play, to eat, and to learn the basics — so activities you invent genuinely land. Drawing, crafts, music, games. The oldest ones are getting ready to start kindergarten, learning to spell and count, and you can teach them a little English if you want to. Volunteers who bring a plan and some materials get more out of this placement than volunteers who wait to be told what to do.

You will also help the staff with administration when it is needed.

The shift pattern is unusual, and in your favour

Centres open Monday to Friday, 08:30 to 16:00. Volunteers work a four to five hour shift, either the morning or the afternoon. That leaves you a genuine half-day, every day, in one of the most rewarding cities in South America to have time on your hands. Be ready to flex, though — shift times move with what the centre needs that week.

    Spanish

Not required, and with children this small a lot of the communication is not verbal anyway. But the caregiver and the staff speak Spanish, and beginner to intermediate Spanish makes you a colleague rather than a guest. Cusco is a good place to take lessons, and plenty of volunteers do exactly that in their free half-day.

    A note on altitude

Cusco sits at roughly 3,400 metres. Most people feel it for a day or two. Plan a gentle arrival, drink more water than you think you need, and leave the high-altitude day trips until your second weekend.

    Who this suits

People who actually like very small children, and who are not thrown by a room that is under-equipped. Previous experience with babies and toddlers is a real advantage here in a way it is not on other placements. And a clean criminal background check is required from every volunteer; Volunteer World applies a four-week minimum to placements involving children, which suits this one — small children take a while to accept a new face, and four weeks is roughly when you stop being a stranger.

    Typisk dag

Sunday — Arrival in Cusco. You are met at Alejandro Velasco Astete airport (CUZ) by the local coordinator holding a VolSol sign with your name on it, and taken to your host family.

Monday — Orientation with the local team: culture and greetings, safety, getting around Cusco, some Spanish, and an introduction to the centre you will be working at. A deliberately easy day, because the altitude is usually making itself felt by now.

Tuesday to Friday — you work one shift a day, either mornings or afternoons:

    • 07:00–08:00 — Breakfast with your host family
    • Morning shift — roughly 08:30 to 13:00 at the daycare centre
    • Afternoon shift — roughly 11:30 to 16:00 at the daycare centre
    • Off-shift — yours. Spanish lessons, exploring, or preparing activities and materials for the children
    • 19:00–20:00 — Dinner with the host family

Which shift you get depends on what the centre needs, and it can change. Volunteers who treat that as part of the deal rather than an inconvenience have a much better time.

Weekends — Free. The Sacred Valley is on the doorstep, Machu Picchu is the trip everyone plans for, and Rainbow Mountain, Humantay Lake, Moray and the Maras salt pans all fit into a weekend. In the city, the Plaza de Armas, San Pedro market and the San Blas quarter are worth proper time.

The same pattern runs from the second week. Centres close for Peruvian public holidays, and the team will tell you in advance.

Volunteers use it for Spanish lessons, for wandering San Pedro market, for sitting in the Plaza de Armas, or for climbing up to San Blas and looking back over the roofs.

Weekends are where Cusco really pays out. Machu Picchu is the trip most people build their stay around — book the permit well ahead, because daily numbers are capped. The Sacred Valley, Rainbow Mountain, Humantay Lake, Moray and the Maras salt pans are all weekend-sized. Leave the highest ones until you have acclimatised properly.

Cusco also has more cooking classes, live music and decent coffee than a city that size has any right to. Most volunteers end up travelling in groups formed over dinner at their host families.

    Andre færdigheder

Real experience with babies and toddlers counts here in a way it does not on other placements - childminding, nursery work, nannying, younger siblings, all of it. Beyond that, bring ideas: there is no set curriculum, so volunteers who arrive with activities, songs, games and craft materials genuinely change what the children's day looks like. Any Spanish helps you work with the caregiver. A clean criminal background check is required.

    • Vaccinations

    • Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley and other weekend trips. Machu Picchu permits are capped daily and need booking well ahead
    • Personal spending, Spanish lessons, and any materials you choose to buy for the children

Most nationalities enter Peru visa-free as tourists, so there is usually no visa cost — check your own country's position before booking.

The price shown already includes your application fee – there is nothing further to pay us on arrival. Payment can be split into interest-free instalments, with the balance due 45 days before you start.

Afhentning i lufthavnen i Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport

Arrival pickup is included. Land at Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport (CUZ) and the local coordinator or a representative will be waiting at the terminal door with a VolSol sign showing your name, then take you to your host family.

If you are already in Peru or arriving overland — plenty of volunteers come up by bus from Lima or Arequipa, or across from Bolivia — tell the team beforehand and they will meet you at the bus station or another agreed point instead.

Send your flight or bus details before you travel, and message the team if anything changes en route. Somebody is on call.

    Indkvartering

You live with a Peruvian host family in Cusco, sharing a room with one or more other volunteers. You eat with the family and you are in their home rather than in accommodation attached to it — for most volunteers this turns out to be the part of the trip they remember.

The houses are clean and comfortable. Most have two bathrooms with hot showers, and many have Wi-Fi and cable TV. Bedding is provided. Cusco gets genuinely cold at night for much of the year because of the altitude rather than the season, so bring warm layers whenever you come.

Your daycare centre is a manageable distance away, and the team walks you through the routes and the sensible ways to travel during orientation.

Private room upgrades are usually available at extra cost if you would rather have your own space.

    Mad og drikkevarer

Three home-cooked meals a day, Monday to Friday, eaten with your host family.

Peruvian home cooking is one of the quiet arguments for the homestay. Expect a soup to start, then rice, potatoes in varieties you did not know existed, fresh salads, juices and a dessert. The menu changes daily.

Weekend meals are not included — that is deliberate rather than an oversight, because most volunteers are away travelling on Saturday and Sunday. Budget for eating out then. Cusco is full of good cheap places, starting with the San Pedro market stalls.

Flag allergies and dietary requirements before you arrive and the team will match you to a family who can cook around them. Vegetarians are easy; strict vegans should say so early.

    Oplysninger ved ankomst

Start dates — Weekly and year-round, with arrival on a Sunday.

Getting there — Fly into Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport in Cusco (CUZ). Nearly every international route connects through Lima (LIM), and the Lima to Cusco flight is about 90 minutes. Spending a night in Lima first is worth considering — it breaks up the journey and softens the altitude jump.

Transfers — Arrival pickup from Cusco airport is included. If you are arriving overland by bus, or are already travelling in Peru, tell the team and they will meet you at the bus station or an agreed point instead.

Altitude — Cusco is at about 3,400 metres, and this genuinely catches people out. Expect breathlessness and possibly a headache for a day or two. Take it slowly at first, drink plenty of water, go easy on alcohol, and save the high day trips for later. If you have a heart or lung condition, speak to your doctor before booking.

Visa — Most nationalities enter Peru visa-free as tourists for up to 183 days. Check your own country's position before you travel.

Background check — A clean criminal background check is required from every volunteer. Start the check early; in some countries it takes several weeks.

Health — You will be working closely with babies and toddlers, so make sure your routine vaccinations are up to date and talk to a travel clinic well before you go.

When to come — The dry season runs roughly May to September: clear days, cold nights. The wet season, November to March, is greener and quieter with rain most afternoons. The centres run year-round.
