Gain University Credit  on the Great Barrier Reef

Take your passion for marine conservation to the next level with a one-of-a-kind opportunity to earn university credit while working hands-on in one of the world’s most iconic ecosystems—the Great Barrier Reef!

This immersive, career-boosting program combines an accredited diploma-level online course, written by leading marine specialists, with an in-field reef monitoring placement, allowing you to apply your learning in real-world conservation efforts. The course not only covers the vital aspects of marine conservation but also includes in-depth study on the role of volunteering in creating impactful, sustainable change. You won’t just be studying the importance of marine conservation—you’ll be living it.

It's not just for uni candidates – this program is designed for anyone eager to make a difference, whether you're looking to change careers, explore a new passion, or take a break from the usual routine. The flexible online study allows you to learn at your own pace, fitting perfectly around your lifestyle and commitments. Paired with real-world field experience, you’ll gain valuable, hands-on skills in marine conservation. Whether you're a career changer, a retiree, or simply someone seeking purpose-driven work, this program offers the chance to learn, grow, and contribute meaningfully to the planet's future.

    • Planning your selection as an international volunteer (approx. 8 hours)

    • Diving into Marine Conservation (approx. 8 hours)

    • Undertaking and completing your volunteering abroad placement (approx. 6 hours online content + 20 hours minimum work placement)

    How It Works:
Before You Arrive: Complete the first modules of your online marine conservation diploma. Designed by expert marine biologists and conservationists, the course challenges your critical thinking and equips you with an advanced understanding of reef ecology, climate change impacts, and marine sustainability. This academic foundation ensures that by the time you reach the field, you’ll be ready to contribute meaningfully to volunteering and conservation research.

Your Field Placement: Based on a stunning tropical island, your hands-on conservation experience begins. Join a team of marine researchers and passionate volunteers, snorkeling over vibrant coral reefs, collecting scientific data on marine biodiversity, and conducting reef health assessments. You’ll monitor indicator species, coral bleaching, and the impact of climate change, playing an active role in conservation decision-making.

✔ Ethical & Impact-Driven Volunteering: Unlike mass-market voluntourism, this program is built on ethical, science-backed conservation practices. O2E works directly with marine researchers, ensuring every volunteer plays a role in a long-term, data-driven effort to protect and restore fragile marine ecosystems.

A Unique Study & Travel Experience: You won’t find another program like this—where else can you snorkel on the Great Barrier Reef, contribute to real marine research, and gain university credit at the same time? Spend your days learning, exploring, and connecting with like-minded ocean advocates. In the evenings, enjoy beachside sunsets, group discussions, and a chance to reflect on the incredible knowledge you’ve gained.

Start Dates & Flexibility: With start dates twice per month, you can plan your adventure around your studies and schedule. Whether you’re a university student, aspiring marine biologist, or conservation enthusiast, this program is an unmissable opportunity to boost your academic credentials while making a real difference for the reef.

Are you ready to dive in, learn from world-class marine specialists, and turn your passion for the ocean into action?
