    Om programmet

In 2005, we started building. First, a park area, then a school teaching students through project-based education, situated on a campus built from trash and natural materials. At the school, we teach not only the standard curriculum but also education for sustainable development. At the school, the community is at the forefront. We create jobs for teachers and builders, provide access to education, combat poverty, and build projects to offer basic support, including water tanks, composting toilets, tire retention walls, efficient stoves for improved respiratory health, and more.

During the workshop, we typically build a classroom. We leave for the jobsite at 715 am and start construction at 8 am. The jobsite is normally located in a village near Comalapa and the drive time is about 30 minutes. We provide transportation. We sometimes do classroom sessions on building aspects, but that depends on whether the students want them or not. Most students feel like they learn enough while doing the actual construction. Then lunch is prepared by a local chef. The work day ends at 4 pm. During free time, people often watch the sunset over the volcanoes, wander around the town, play games, or unwind.

GBW participants will learn, build, and live alongside staff from Comalapa and other volunteers from around the world. Students will live in a green-designed home (if that is what they choose) and help maintain a zero-waste household, an experience that can foster life-changing habits.

During the GBW, we cover a range of concepts relevant to eco-building and sustainability principles. From October 10 to November 7, we will be building a classroom for a local school in our community. You will learn to green-build step-by-step, from the foundation up!

In the evenings, volunteers typically visit the town center to explore local galleries (Comalapa is an area known for its paintings since Maya times), the local market, or relax at the volunteer house to watch the sunset over the volcanoes and play some board games. There are often events taking place in town, especially in the months of April for Semana Santa and November for Día de los Muertos, as well as various Saint days. On the weekends, there are many options to do that that are not far from town. It is just over an hour by local bus to Guatemala City or Antigua, and a couple of hours more to Lake Atitlan. Much closer to home are Maya ruins, coffee farms, horseback riding, and more. In Antigua, I highly recommend hiking Volcan del Fuego, which is active and erupts lively every 20 minutes.

    Tjenester på stedet

    Included in these fees are:

    • Lunch during the week is prepared by local chefs
    • Drinking water
    • Transportation to and from the project site
    • Learning from various expert instructors with decades of experience in green building
    • Building supplies and tools we will use in our hands-on learning part of the project, a school room for a rural village
Any program fees we have left over after the above-listed expenses recirculate to support our school. The "Hero School" is an eco campus you'll experience, educating 177 local students from Comalapa and surrounding villages. The curriculum is developed by local teachers to promote education for sustainable development. Students receive an enhanced education that supports cultural learning and the incorporation of green building practices. At each grade level, students have a different project focus, including water tanks, composting toilets, improved stoves, and tire retaining walls, to practice math, science, and social studies. Then, we build these projects for some of the most vulnerable families in the community. I'm excited to show you the campus and the education system!

    Mad og drikkevarer

Each day, lunch is provided at the project site.

We work with incredible local restaurants. We have collaborated with these restaurants for a decade. We are more than happy to accommodate food allergies and meal preferences.

The Green Building Workshop lasts 4 weeks. We welcome you to join for one to four weeks. If you have a specific area of green building you'd like to learn about, such as earthen materials, structural design, water systems, or power systems, please let us know, and we can advise on the best week(s) to attend. In the video below, you can hear from local team member Roberto about one of the past projects we completed, a house for his family. This year, we'll be building a school, modeled after our flagship Hero School, for a neighboring village.
