    Om programmet

In Córdoba it is common practice to collect recyclable rubbish — cardboard, plastics — from the streets using a horse and cart, and sell it on to recycling companies. The people doing that work are themselves poor. They often cannot afford to feed the horse properly, and have never been taught how to care for one. The result is animals found malnourished, untreated and worked to exhaustion.

    The sanctuary

Founded in 2013 in the hills of central Argentina, on 312 hectares of green meadow, forest, mountain pasture and river. It exists to take those horses off the streets and give them medical care, space and the rest of their lives.

Who lives there now: around 160 horses, 4 ponies, 7 donkeys, 3 pygmy donkeys, 2 mules, 14 cows, 1 buffalo, 23 goats, 11 sheep, 25 pigs, 3 wild boars, 4 llamas, 25 dogs and 10 roosters. Over 200 animals, nearly all of which arrived from a life of drudgery and mistreatment.

The bigger campaign — and its honest limits

The sanctuary is not only a refuge. It campaigns to replace cart horses with motorised vehicles across Latin America, and thousands of horses have already been freed that way. There is real support for the movement inside government and in society.

But the project's own account is refreshingly unvarnished: tens of thousands of rubbish-collection horses are still waiting to be freed in Argentina alone, and political progress is slow, so a great deal of patience is required. That is worth knowing before you come.

    The team you would join

Five or six permanent staff — including biologists, scientists and a veterinarian — supported by only four or five volunteers at a time. This is a small operation with real expertise in it, and you will work closely with people who know what they are doing.

    What you would actually do

    • Animal care — feeding, grooming, clean water, exercise and enrichment
    • Cleaning and maintenance — enclosures, common areas. Unglamorous and constant, and most of the job
    • Rehabilitation and medical care — assisting with physiotherapy and administering medication, under the guidance of the veterinary staff
    • Environmental enrichment — building toys, puzzles and structures to keep the animals mentally engaged
    • Construction and repair — enclosures, fencing, infrastructure across a very large property
    • Education and outreach — events raising awareness of animal welfare and the sanctuary's campaign

Training and guidance are provided, for the safety of the animals and of you.

    Be honest with yourself

This is outdoor physical work with large animals, much of it cleaning and carrying. Rescued horses can be nervous of people for good reason. If you want to ride, this is the wrong placement — these animals are here to be left alone and looked after.

    Who it suits

Anyone 18 or over in good physical and mental health, patient, and comfortable around large animals. A criminal background check is required. Minimum two weeks.

Transfer to the sanctuary — A private transfer takes you out of the city to the sanctuary in the hills. From then on you live on site in the volunteer house.

    The working day

Sanctuary work follows the animals, not a timetable, so the day starts early and the tasks change with the season and what the property needs:

    • Morning — Feeding and watering. With over 200 animals this is a substantial job and it happens whatever the weather
    • Through the day — Cleaning enclosures, grooming, enrichment, fencing and repairs, and helping the veterinary staff with treatment or rehabilitation where you are needed
    • Afternoon — Construction and maintenance projects across the 312 hectares, or outreach work if something is running
    • Evening — Meals at the project with the small team and the other volunteers

Meals are provided at the project.

With only four or five volunteers on site, everyone's contribution is visible — there is nowhere to be a spare part, which most people find is the appeal.

    Fritidsaktiviteter

The sanctuary itself is 312 hectares of meadow, forest, mountain pasture and river. Walking it in your own time is the obvious thing to do, and the reason most volunteers say the place gets under their skin.

The Sierras de Córdoba — Hiking, rivers and waterfalls, and mountain villages. La Cumbrecita is a car-free alpine village in the hills; Villa General Belgrano nearby is famous for its beer festival. Mina Clavero and the Traslasierra valley sit on the far side of the range.

Córdoba city — Argentina's second city and its oldest university town. The Jesuit Block is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the student population keeps the nightlife serious, and the food and live music are excellent.

Alta Gracia — A Jesuit estancia and the house where Che Guevara grew up, both within easy reach.

Further afield — Buenos Aires is an overnight bus or a short flight. Mendoza and the wine country are west; the Iguazú falls are a longer trip north.

Riding — Worth saying plainly: the sanctuary's horses are not for riding. They are recovering from years of being worked. If you want to ride in Argentina, the estancias around Córdoba offer it and the local team can point you to one.

Afhentning i lufthavnen i Ingeniero Aeronautico Ambrosio L.V. Taravella International Airport

Pickup is included. The return drop is not.

Arrive at Ingeniero Aeronáutico Ambrosio L.V. Taravella International Airport, Córdoba (COR). You are met at the airport and taken to a centrally located hostel in the city.

Your induction happens in Córdoba, and a private transfer then takes you out to the sanctuary in the hills.

🚩 The return airport drop is NOT included. Budget for getting yourself back to COR at the end of your placement — the sanctuary is outside the city.

Getting to Córdoba — Most volunteers connect through Buenos Aires on a short domestic flight. There are also some direct regional services. Leave a sensible connection window.

    Indkvartering

    Two stages.

On arrival — A night in a centrally located hostel in Córdoba city, where your in-country induction takes place. Useful: you see the city and meet the team before you head into the hills.

Then the sanctuary — A private transfer takes you out to the volunteer house on the sanctuary itself, where you stay for the rest of your placement. You live on the 312-hectare property, among the animals you are looking after.

With only four or five volunteers on site at a time, plus the five or six permanent staff, this is a small and close-knit place to live rather than a large volunteer house.

What to expect — Simple, rural accommodation on a working sanctuary in the Sierras de Córdoba. It is at altitude and gets genuinely cold at night, including in summer, so bring warm layers.

Meals are provided at the project.

    Mad og drikkevarer

Meals are provided at the project, eaten with the permanent team and the other volunteers.

Expect straightforward Argentine cooking. This is rural Córdoba province: beef, empanadas, milanesas, bread, and more mate than you have ever been offered in your life — accepting it is how you get taken seriously.

Dietary requirements — Tell us when you book so the kitchen knows in advance. Argentina is not the easiest country in the world for vegetarians and vegans, so flag it early rather than on arrival, and be prepared to supplement occasionally in Córdoba city.

The sanctuary is a working property away from the city, so plan to eat what is cooked rather than expecting to pop out.

Arrive at Ingeniero Aeronáutico Ambrosio L.V. Taravella International Airport, Córdoba (COR). You are collected from the airport.

Your first night is in Córdoba city, in a centrally located hostel, where the in-country induction takes place. A private transfer then takes you out to the sanctuary.

🚩 The return airport drop is NOT included. Budget for getting yourself back to COR at the end.

Getting to Córdoba — Usually via Buenos Aires on a short domestic flight, or direct from a few regional hubs.

Documents — A criminal background check is required to join.

Health — You must be in good physical and mental health. Make sure your tetanus vaccination is current — it matters on a project involving fencing, construction and large animals.

What to bring — Sturdy boots you do not mind ruining, work gloves, long trousers, warm layers, waterproofs and a hat. The Sierras de Córdoba sit at altitude and get genuinely cold at night, even in summer.

🚩 Not included — Travel insurance, vaccinations, visa and visa-extension fees, personal expenses, and the return airport drop.

Visa — Many nationalities enter Argentina visa-free as visitors for up to 90 days. Check your own position, particularly for longer placements.

Spanish — Not a formal requirement here, but the permanent team is Argentine and a working level of Spanish will make your placement considerably better. Bring what you have.

When to come — Year-round. Argentine summer runs December to February (hot, and the hardest physical conditions); winter runs June to August and is cold in the hills but far more comfortable to work in.
